I was in a guitar store a couple of days ago and saw a bunch of magazines...not subscribing to any right now and wondered what folks thought which magazines were worth subscribing to?

I've heard complaints that some magazines reviews are unabashedly biased toward advertisers. Somewhat understand that but then...if I read a review I want to know it's somewhat realistic in its judgment.

Not looking for just TABS or just "Guitar God" interviews...sort of a well rounded magazine.

Thoughts?

Guitar Player...whenever Editor Boy Michael Molenda isn't playing too big of a role in the content that month. That dude drives me nuts.

My favorite magazine is Guitar Techniques, but it's mostly about actually playing guitar. As far something more well rounded goes then my next favorite is Guitar Player, but only when it's covering something or someone I'm interested in.

Blues review

and sometimes Vintage Guitar.

Almost forgot, for entertainment value "Guitar Aficionado", last month's issue had me rolling my eyes with the article on John Mclaughlin.

Sorry, but I lived in the "Principaute de Monaco" as a child and often return as my aunt & uncle and cousins are Monegasques.
The article was just crass, highlighting the "to be seen" spots rather than the reality of a 1.8 square mile principality which having weaned itself of the despicable Gambling Industry as major revenue has transformed itself into a viably successful business and financial center.
In addition there are many places that one can dine and enjoy without it costing an arm and a leg, that is unless you have to go where Paris H. may appear.

Sorry Y'all had to get that one off!! I feel much better now :x

Premier Guitar is great...Their website is pretty cool too and they always have some monthly give-aways. Each month they usually have an article about celebrity gear. I love those...

I haven't read any guitar mags in their paper form for a few years now thanks to the internet, but I always liked Guitar World. They always have interviews, gear reviews, and lessons. Little commercialized just like the rest these days though.

Vintage Guitar mag is about my favourite but it's mostly aimed at vintage guitar fans and collectors yet it does have a lot of features on contemporary guitars and musicians. It also doesn't print much in the way of music and tab etc.I find Guitar Player is about the best all around guitar magazine.Guitar World has become a pro-metal rag and aside from Andy Aledort's contributions much of it is vacuous filler. Some of the writers even use profanities in their reviews-not that I'm a prude because I can spew out some multi-syllable outbursts that would make a statue blush but I don't agree with printing obscenities when the content is read by minors or people who find it offensive. Some of the British Guitar mags are very good as is Premier Guitar which others have mentioned.
