WEll considering recent promo's I would say the world is not over the Beatle's.

Pity really, there are so many groups deserving equal attention that have slipped thru the bards memory lines..

Not too sure about equal attention. If some of the other bands made as much of an impact on the music world they wouldn't be forgotten. But man Link Wray was seriously cool.

The thing is the Beatles were at the right place at the right time. Many other bands were just one hit wonders and were soon forgotten. It didn't matter how good the one song or album was.

Yes but the Beatle's as well as th Stone's had their act together when it came to Promotion of the product.

That I believe is equally responsible for their success.

The way I have Heard/Seen/Read over the years, it seem to me that George was the one without an ego issue, more like to be the the real humble one of the bunch.

At least the way I see it.

You're right, the world's not over the Beatles--(I'm not, either).

...but imagine being in a band that you're pushed aside or marginalized on a consistant basis, and then when you finally step out and make your own music (music that you've been trying to record or promote for several years)...and then people keep on bringing up the band that marginalized you.

That would be frustrating, to say the least. That's what I meant when I said George was "over" the Beatles.

As far as bands deserving equal attention...who?

Who else started or epitomized at least four different musical trends (British Invasion Pop, electric singer/songwriter material, Psychedelic Rock/Pop, Post-psychedelic Mature Hippy Music)?

Who else had four instrumentalists that changed the way people approached and played their instruments? (...and I am including Ringo in that because he changed the "accepted" way of holding drumsticks).

Who else had four songwriters that changed the way people approached and executed that process? (...I am including Ringo in that because no matter how many beers I drank I could never come up with an idea like "Octopus's Garden").

Name one other band in which everybody sang...(standard Ringo disclaimer)

They're even a touchstone in music (Beatle-esque melodies/harmonies), instruments (how many times have we described a new piece of gear as "a guitar/amp/bass like John's/George's/Paul's"), fashion (Beatle boots, suits, haircuts)...

I personally like the Stones better than the Beatles, but I recognize they were something in the span of 8 years that the Stones have never been in the course of 45+ years...

So I re-ask the question;

Who else (from any era) deserves equal attention in 2010?

JEEEZ.... LOUISE......

I'd hate to get you going on the Alamo and the fact that it's smack dab in the middle of downtown San Antonio !!!

As far as "Octopus's garden"... Have you tried Lucy ? Last seen in the stratosphere looking for precious gems !!

I see your point, or at least some of it.
Robert Plant, I'm sure would like to never be asked again when's the Led Zep reunion.

Yes... I liked some of the Beatle's music, but a lot of their early stuff was POP music, they took things in a different direction but if it wasn't for the direction from behind the scenes, I do not believe they would have reached so far.
Granted timing mattered immensely, but the early sixties did have a few other bands or musicians that could rival the Beatle's as far as musical skills.

All rock n roll around 62-66 (early Beatles) was pop music.

I'm sorry, their the greatest band ever and no, I'm not really a fan. I just know extreme talent when I hear it.

Modern music would not be where it is without them. No one else pushed boundaries like they did, Hendrix included. He wouldn't have made it in England without their influence on the scene. Beck, Clapton and Townsend certainly didn't want him around.

How do you distinguish what is pop and what is rock and roll?

Exactly, though I wasn't around back then plenty of my friends were. From what I can gather things were far too new to have these silly boundaries and be pigeon holed.

i kind of lied about being a beatles fan. as a teen all of my family were, and still are HUGE beatles fans. beatles, beatles and more beatles. me, i rebelled as usual and started listening to heavy metal. still do.........sometimes.
truth is the beatles are arguably the best band ever. georges tunes are the ones i like the most and his solo stuff is awesome. i always thought of him as the quiet one. i'd think john or paul would be the ego dudes.

Sure there were/are better musicians than the Beatles, but virtuosity on an instrument doesn't always translate into GOOD songs that end up being still played and talked about almost 50 years later.

For example: what if in 1963 Chet Atkins, Buddy Rich, Tommy Tedesco, James Jamerson, and Frank Sinatra (all "better musicians" than The Beatles at the time) got together in a room to jam. Do you think whatever they cut would be as simple and powerful for the time as 'I Want to Hold You Hand' and inspire millions of kids to start a band?

Besides, just take a look at what many classical composers (especially Leonard Bernstien) at the time had to say about the Beatles. Even old stuffy composers were impressed by the Beatles songs and their crazy chords, melodies, harmonies, and chord changes.

It would be hard for any man not to have a huge ego with the success the Beatles had and are still having 50 years later. But to me really George was the humblest of all the fab four. I've been checking alot of the videos lately and am appreciating the Beatles more than ever.

Sorry Guy's and Gal's,

I've just never understood the purpose of elevating anyone, group or thing to the level of a deity.
Great artists are great artists, but they are just human beings, with the same physical boundaries as other humans.

Granted a small minority are capable of shepherding the masses but, on that account I'm not so sure that it is because of natural skill or that so many are just content to follow the status quo. (food for thought).
