NAMM should be about NEW. Jobs' Apple keynote was a dud, too. Skinny laptops and bridge saddles do not an exciting show make. But I'm still holding out for the Princeton! I think you guys have it in the back room gettin its chrome polished and Tolex waxed!

Would you have been happier if Shane had saved the new Vintage Modifieds for NAMM rather than releasing 'em earlier in the year? :-)

No cookies for us--Fender didn't build enough '65 Princetons to ship so they're delaying the intro for a month or two. Boo hoo.

Instead we get these relative lumps of coal direct from the floor of NAMM:

Not sure what the Dodge Charger racing job is besides some kinda Deluxe. And the other one looks like a Blues Deluxe Reissue, maybe. Anyone have any ideas? Supposedly, there's something new about these besides the paint job.

Hey, Fender's got a pulse! These are tres kewl...

Image

...the new HRD cabs! See, this is what I've been prodding Fender about for a while, start thinking about the old piggyback Bandmasters! Mid-sized heads and cabs. Now we got the cabs (mini as they are with only 1-12), how about a nice little head to go along with it? How cool would that be??? A 20-watt 6V6 head, and a classic 40-watt 6L6GC head. Build your own piggyback amp with color and covering choices. Very web 2.0!

Fender is back, baby! These cabs with their colors and coverings are the start of a whole new amp revolution. Because as a gigging guy, I'm not gonna lug one of these things along in addition to a 50-lb. amp that already comes with its own speaker. Plus it's ungainly on a small stage. Does the HRD go on top? Next to it? Across the stage in a stereo split? Naw, the HRD is mono. I dunno, seems crazy to me.

But. As a showman, these cute little candy-colored boxes allow me to choose my color (that's HUGE!) and match it to my choice of color-matched head! And each component is light as a feather--one of the killer assets of the old Bandmaster piggy. Wait Maruuk you impetuous fool...where in blazes ARE these color-matched tubescent heads you might well ask???

On Fender's drawing board right now. And you can put that in the bank and smoke it.

Now hold on, what is this INSANELY COOL custom color-matched piggyback rig reminding me of? Seems to me some ampcos already offer similar customized aspects. Yep, they do. And they're all top drawer, top-PRICED BOUTIQUE AMPS. So in one swell foop, Fender has Joe Sixpack moving into gorgeous, hip, modular color-matched components for a ^&^%$#@ FRACTION of what Carr or Victoria or Dumble would charge you. Is that crazy? Madness? Mad like Jim Cramer, and he's worth 100 mil.

Trust me, those fab cabs above are just Trojan horses. Bearing very swingin gifts for us later this year.

These cabs are the cookies with the creamy yummy surprise hidden inside. The best is yet to come, baby. Patience.

Custom color 2-12s. A 10 and a 12. A single 15 chrome-cap JBL with the old Single Showman baffle/port trick. Guitarists can afford to build their own customized matching amps now. They'll be retro and future at the same time. Players might have two cabs: Grab n Go single 12 for the practices, jams and bar gigs, beefier twin 12s for the concert hall. Keep the same head.

These little cabs are the advance scouts from an invading army of bigger mid-sized cabs to come. And this time, they'll be welcomed with flowers and candy...and cookies. Lots of coooookies.

It would be cool if they came out with a lil 5E3 head. I'd buy one of those. PTP wiring. Oh yeah. I'd buy one.

Sweet! But this time, instead of tired tweed, you could get that head in any of 8 mindblowing shades and coverings matched to exactly the cab of your choice. Retro and future at the same time.

And Fender can build these matching components far cheaper than any boutique operation can because they're mass-produced by a company which prides itself on efficiency of scale. The highly skilled and paid craftsmen craft the design and production path, they don't need to be there for hand assembly as in the boutique shops.

And the beauty of this strategy for Fender is...they can build this series slowly, one at a time. Test the waters, expand as needed. And at the same time on the marketing side... the neat old classic tube-based piggyback is back as something completely NEW. Which is a tactic that has always served Fender well. Building on past strength while innovating relentlessly.

I love the idea. A 5E3(or some other favorite circuit) head and matching 10x12 (maybe with the Jensen Special Designs) cab. Yeah man, that would sell.
