I use Dunlop ("Dumbflop" hey Niki ) very sparingly with the amp because it sucks a.. that is why I have it on a separate signal chain. I have to try the mod for it.

I did notice that however it sounded great with the setup like this.
Guitar -> Dunlop wah - > OD (TS-9) -> DI to mix board -> PA.

I guess it sounds fine in a more digital oriented environment, I dunno.

No doubt what you're finding there is that the TS9's midrange is helping the wah. I'd guess that you're rolling down the tone either at the pedal or the guitar too.
Try the mods Dan, that link I posted lists some excellent ones. Better yet find a cheapo dumbflop for sale and turn it into a killer, that way you haven't lost anything at all. If you like it, you can mod the other, use it as a testbed, or sell it. Modded or unmodded you'll get even. Just keep your eyes open for a cheapo one. They come up regularly.

I have a plain old Crybaby and an old 70's Fender Fuzz Wah. Come on guys it's a friggin wah. How often is it engaged? I use it as a tone control or for some feedback effects sometimes and once in a while as a full tilt wah, but I just hate standing there going wacka, wacka, wacka. It's funny, most people I hear can't really use them effectively anyway. Zappa and Hendrix were masters. Clapton was a joke with a wah. Just my opinion. YMMV

Yup, guitar and pedal were rolled off. Actually with a guitar I constantly muck around the tone and volume controls during the play. I want to try that Martian's trick (first time I saw him doing it) with the inline capacitors to the tone controls to get a finer tone control and less of the treble loss. I am noticing Dunlop wah pedals regularly on a local Craigslist for cheap, thanks for that idea.

It's a funny thing. It's not life and death it's just an effect that gets used occasionally. I get bored pretty quickly with it. No one in your audience will be able to tell the difference. I'm sure no one in the crowd ever says" that wahs not as vowel like as I like" of "Boy is that wah sucking tone" LOL

Here's another trick. Loosen the rack and turn the pot to change the range of the wah then tighten the rack back up. I usually roll off a little treble that way.

It's just a personal choice and as far as I'm concerned they all sound pretty cliche.

Well theres good evidence that Hendrix was introduced to the wah by Clapton. Calling the supremely expressive solo on say White room a joke is a bit off I think.

Also Wah always. A good wah whether stationary or moving is the best clean boost you'll ever find. You just don't get it out of dumbflop's and Pox's. Their far too thin and raspy.

Furthermore Hendrix was the ultimate wackawacka wah user. Machine Gun or Voodoo Chile prove that.

Hendrix goes a lot farther than wacka wacka. There was quite a bit of wah control in both Machine Gun and Voodoo Chile depending on what version you hear. I always found the Wah on White Room funny and predictable even as a young kid when it first came out. I never like any of Claptons wah stuff. Just my opinion, nothing wrong if that's what you like. I'm actually a huge Clapton fan. I built the best clean boost I ever found. Transparent and variable too.

Yeah the rhythm/melody guitar is very predictable, or I prefer the term percusive. It's bang intime with the snare.
The solo's are where the mastery is.

I voted Vox because I consider it to be slightly more "vocal" sounding but as far as being the "ultimate"? (I re-read the OP) Sorry. Neither. I'm still searching for that.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Both my Vox Clyde McCoy(non-picture late '66 early '67) and my Jen Cry Baby (67-68) were made in Italy after Thomas Organ Co. moved to Sepulveda Ca.Although made probably in the same factory and near the same time period the insides are markedly different especially the circuit board.

jerry cantrell = wah master

people will always have a bias towards hendrix and clapton because they are considered "innovative" and "the best"..... but cantrell never has and unfortunately probably never will get the credit he deserves for his "wah mastery" or his playing in general.... IMO

also, i like dunlop... havnt tried vox and have no intention of spending insane $$$ on vintage pedals for a minor, almost unnoticeable, difference
