I might as well ask the newbish question I was going to ask now...

What is the advantage of using an effects loop and how does it work?

Simplest explanation is that effects loop is a signal "path" circuit that is placed between the pre-amp and power amp circuits (there are some design variations to this). Modulation effects supposedly sound/work "better" when working behind the pre-amp and this is according to engineering and some peoples ears. Everyone has their preferences and may I suggest you find a setting that you like on the DD-20 and listen to the any changes as you move the pedal either in the loop or in front. Heck even at front move it around the different part of your signal chain, who knows what you might find interesting if you have the time.

In my case my amps don't have the "loop" and I use DD-3 in front of amp (meaning last pedal in the chain) and it sounds fine and I am not hearing any thumping when off. Before the DD I have pre-amp pedals (overdrives).

I had a EH memory toy and that was a fine sounding analog pedal, but the switching on and off annoyed me with a very audible clicking.

Hope that helps

Re the Echoplex: TheEchoplex is/was a fabulous piece of gear we used one for our vocals for years yet they have grown to be very expensive on the vintage effects market with pristine examples going for over $1000. The Guild Copycat was also a great unit and can be picked up somewhat cheaper also the Roland Space Echo was a great vintage delay.

TGS,

Have you tried the Boss DD-7? It has many of the features you are looking for. You may also want to purchase the expression pedal that plugs into it. It has tap control, looping, analog, digetal, and backwards delay options.

I seriously considered one, but preferred the simplicity of the MXR Carbon Copy for me. Just throwing another option out there. Visit the Boss website for a demo.

Echoplex, is the only delay effect I've ever used, a small adjustable tape delay effect, in 66 and 67, it sounded and worked great, there might still be some in use, don't know how easy to find.

the echoplex has been rereleased and is a lot like the old one.

And most important of all, I really like the way your mind works on this stuff. You think it through clearly and sensibly - I have complete faith that you will find the ideal solution for your needs.

Well, it helps quite a bit when you can talk to other people about it. Especially when the people you're talking to know what they're talking about. :D I don't think I'd know half of what I know if not for forums like this.

BTW, TGS: I was showing my wife some of the vids of your playing that have been posted on this Forum. She has become an instant fan, so keep sharing your stuff with us please! Mrs C sends her regards. :D

That's awesome! Tell her I said hi. :D

I looked up how to use the looper feature on the DD-20 and it's about ten thousand times easier than I thought it'd be. I'll try it when I'm at practice tomorrow.

I got to play with a DD-7 for quite a while at work (not on the clock) one day. I determined that for the size and price I liked the Marshall Echohead better, but if I went with Boss then it would have to be the DD-20. I think the main reason I wasn't thrilled with it was that I basically used it for two delays. The smooth delay (digital but a little warmer sounding, I'm actually a big fan of that setting) and reverse. But I love how I can cycle through the presets so easily on it. I was disappointed I couldn't use tap tempo (stupid drummers :P ). But I think that as far as digital delays go it's my favorite.

I've been looking at some analog delays and I think I really like the MXR Carbon Copy. I wish I could try one, but from the demos I've watched it's what I would be after for about 75% of what I'd be using delay for.

So tentatively I'm thinking a Boss DD-20 and MXR Carbon Copy would cover everything, and that's what I'm leaning towards.

The only two things I have to work out is why the DD-20 causes that thumping/tapping even when it's off (effects loop may take care of that). And also really think hard about the Marshall Echohead. I could get it for more than half the price of the Boss and about the same as a used Carbon Copy. Maybe I could use it with a DD-20 in place of a Carbon Copy? I like the reverse on the Echohead a lot too. It's possible I'd get it just for that. And maybe it'll hold me over until I can get the funds raised for the DD-20 and/or Carbon Copy. Well, at least I'm getting much closer to figuring it out. :)

Hi TGS,

If you get the chance, I reckon you'd do well to check out the Line 6 DL-4.

Fast becoming an industry standard these days. I'm a big fan of the Line 6 stuff. Very well made and user friendly bit of kit.

Hope this helps.

Andy

Hey TGS,

I was just searching for something for my superchamp XD and came across this posting.

Quote:
Since you're already talking about cabs (and departing from the 2-handle paradigm) and since you already have other tube amps - just run the line-out from SCXD into the "line in" (or FX-return) on your other tube amp - you'll get 2 benefits - 1. multiple speakers (I call this a pseudo-stack, although in my case i'm using a cheap 12" solid-state bass amp, but still sounds great - SCXD has a very good line-out signal) AND 2. you get a pseudo FX Loop - just put your modulation effects (chorus, delay, reverb, etc.) between the 2 amps (i.e. SCXD Line-Out -> chorus -> Amp B Line-In) - SCXD will project "dry" signal, while the other amp will have "wet" (so you'll probably want to crank the "mix" knob on the pedals, if they have it). Also, if you put amps on the floor (instead of stacking them) you'll actually get stereo.

Maybe you can try this with your VM and Peavey (if I remember correctly). Just an idea, it might help.

Well, I think I have my delay situation solved for now.

I went ahead and bought the Marshall Echohead. Even though I really liked the DD-20 overall, I don't want to sink that much money into it right now. Our drummer rendered tap tempo and looping useless and I really only used one type of delay most of the time. Borrowing the DD-20 really helped me sort out what I need and what I don't. Someday I'd like one, especially if I start playing in church again someday, for now I'd much rather save my money. I need delay with the alternative rock band I'm in, but I never use it in blues. And blues is really the direction I see myself going in long term so I'd rather save for future guitar/amp upgrades. Plus I have two refrets coming up in the next year.

So my plan now is to use the delay in my amp (which I like a lot) as the one I use for most of my solos and the Echohead as something I use on songs where I need something more specific. On one song I have a reverse delay riff, and on another I need something like a slapback reggae thing. I'll set the Echohead for that and tweak it as needed so that I don't have to mess with the knobs on my amp at all. So essentially my amp will act like the analog delay I was thinking of getting and the Echohead is versatile enough to offer me anything else I might need. And I spent $100 instead of $350 (for DD-20 and Carbon Copy) to do basically the same thing. :)
