Deer hunters out there been in the woods yet?

Spent the early morning on the eastern shore (Queen Annes) and bagged a Sika Deer. Very overcast morning, damp, then rain after we set up just along a marsh area. The Deer come along about 1 1/2 hours after sunrise.

I don't mean this to be rude or silly but...

I am not a hunter and I wounder what you do with the deer. I assume a good portion can go to meat, but do you use the hides for anything? What percentage is eadible?

You think the Neanderthals and the Cro-Magnons just went down to their local A&P market and bought their chow?

We harvest game for sustenance. A quartered deer carcass will feed a family all the way until spring (when wild boar season opens). Pelts are sold to tanners to become apparel and other clothing accessories, antlers are sold to certain apothecaries to be ground up into (allegedly) aphrodesiacs, and the heads are hung on walls within the home to piss off errant liberals who happen to drop by for a visit.

Actually, I am aware that in the past most civilizations made use of every bit of thier prey. It was more of a question as to what is typically currently done with the animal since I am certain that most people are not grounding parts up for an aphrodesiac.

Shot me a Doe yesterday, and my brothers 14 yr old got his first a 4 point. We eat all the meat and sometimes Ill get the hide tanned. One we get enough venison we donate the rest to the local food kitchens. I just need to get my Buck now.

I will keep one or two deer after processing and all the others will go to the food bank. I donated several last year to a participating processor that distributes the meat and yes they sell the hides. Only hides I have kept lately were two Coyotes that I shot last year and I sold them myself and would not mind getting some this year. Theres no limit on them. Skin and sell yourself.

There are a lot more deer today compared to what was around 100 years ago. In MD there are counties that allow you to take 2 antlered and 10 antlerless deer but you can't get a tag for the second antlered until you shown that you took 2 White Tail with out. Sika Deer you are allowed 1+1

yep. my cuz got an 8 point and i missed my first and only shot i've ever taken at a deer. it was so close i could smell him and i let my adrenaline get the best of me. lesson learned hopefully.
i'll be out there every weekend until the season ends. i have a large freezer. not that i'll need it. i'm a much better fisherman than a hunter. can i use the leftover fish parts for aphrodesiacs?
just wondering.

Nevin, I remember you were looking for another job, so how about opening up a hunting/guide service. I know people down here pay thousands of dollars to go on a 3 or 5 day trip in your area.

Maybe you can get ole Ted Nugent to help and have a Rock and Hunt Camp!!
