Hey guys if any of yall have a blackstar amp please help me! I have a blackstar Ht 20 and the gain is not as much as id seen on youtube... It might be my pickups, Alnico Pro 2 in a les paul. Every video Ive seen people were using higher output pickups and its seemed to have more gain. :x I have a jazz and jb set should i put those in? Thanks, Izzy.

You ever consider putting a pedal in between? The Alnico Pro II's in an LP are great. I wouldn't tear them out. They should be heavy enough, its what Slash uses. Unless you're looking to go metal. If thats the case EMG are the way but what a waste of an LP.

Hope you find what you're lookin for mate.

CC

Hi StratyLesPaul,

Have you tried raising your pickup height using the adjustment screws? Moving the pickups closer to the strings will give you more output to the amp, sounding louder. Too close though and you will lose sustain, experiment to find a happy medium.

Edit:
If by jb do you mean Jeff Beck? Those are some of the best sounding pickups that I've heard in a LP. If raising the pickups doesn't get what you want, the Jeff Beck pickups would certainly sound sweet. :)

JB is for Jazz Blues. Jeff Beck used it for a while but never had a pickup named after him.

What you need to consider with spewtube recordings is that a lot of people dont know their arse from wednesday when it comes to recording. You could well be hearing a load of mic overload distortion. I wouldn't trust what I found there. Particularly from guitar mags and shops that use a load of outboard effects to make everything sound exactly so.

If you want distortion or hi-gain overdrive use a overdrive effect pedal and crank the amp loud to get the tubes and speakers working. If you play at low to moderate volumes and can't get the tubes and speakers working, use a distortion pedal it's the only way to get distortion that I'm aware of.

Some Fender tube amps like to be driven and sound their best when driven hard. Tweed Champ 5f1 and 5e3 comes to mind.

my friend has a blackstar and it is a very meaty overdrive, but if you want metal, look into esp/ltd guitars with emg pickups. the pickups in your paul are going to be great, but you wont get that modern metal tone with passive pickups. find a schecter, esp, ibanez with active pickups.

i looked up some pics of the ht 20 on musiciansfriend. crank the gain and volume and turn the master volume knob down. that should give you maximum gain that your unit is capable of handling. other than that, i suggest a pedal.
