Honestly......if it weren't for Fender I wouldn't have bothered.

Nothing sounds like a Stratocaster through a Dual Showman.

Nothing.

I think Leo and the gang pretty much hogged up all the best designs for bass guitar. The Precision and Jazz are the only ones I can think of that would fit in at any gig(country, metal, r&b, rock....).

I'd have to go for a Rickenbacker 4001, or a 4003. The necks on these are basically free of dead spots. Nice body shape, size. Don't care for all that metal, though. Plus, the pickups seem to fizzle out after so long. Next best thing to Fender... :?

If it wasn't for Fender I wouldn't be playing guitar in the first place....

But, I would have to choose Gibson/Epiphone

the other guitar companies Forums didn't seem as cool, friendly, interesting, although I may be biased because Fender guitars are my favorite solid body electric guitars. :D

My fender wasn't my first guitar--so it's possible I might have one less guitar.

Or I'd have some other brand--not sure which--maybe an Ibanez, maybe I'd have more pedals, or another amp.

If it wasn't for Fender I might have never started playing at all. The first time I saw a Lake PLacid Blue strat is when I decided I wanted to play.
But if I had started and there was no Fender, I'd probably go with Schecter. Their guitars have treated me well.

I would have to say either Carvin or Charvel. I remember looking at the magazine ads for Carvin way back when I was a kid in school. Plus it was the 80s and I was into anything Vai at that time so that brought the Charvel into play. Someone gave me an all black Squier Strat with a maple board and that was all she wrote. Today I have the Carvins and Gibsons but nothing gets in the way of the Strat. Music tastes have changed too.

Carvin !!

They have been around as long as Fender and are actually their competition from the same neighborhood.

Guild is owned by Fender... more than likely would not be around today since their acquisition by Fender allowed them to survive.

Gibson.. great guitars but a separate niche in many models. Kalamazoo being the predecessor.

PRS... still in diapers... has not been around that long, nor for that matter was part of that era.

Jackson/Charvel...owned by Fender therefore a moot point !!

Really the question only includes the companies around at the time (late 40's and 50's).
I suspect that if Fender was not around today, there would be a similar company (product wise).
Fender is a result of the Engineers behind the innovations, the demand for better instruments was there so the question is really about if Leo Fender, Les Paul and many others were not able to reinvent the spanish guitar into what we have today, what would be the current design ???

Japanese companies, well as they say..." Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery ". Due to the Japanese tendency to copy first then perhaps innovate
this one is a big question mark if at all..

Godin. :D

They make amazing guitars. Great build quality and are totally underrated amongst the big manufactures.

I have a couple (top left 1st and 2nd) and they Rock!
