A wallet stuffed with platinum plastic, a pimped-out ride, and a few decent lines always seemed to work for me......

Get thee to a bookseller and purchase a copy of "Guitar Rigs--Classic Guitar and Amp Combinations," by Dave Hunter.

His Chapter 1, "The Tone Chain" is arguably the best explanation of how each component works to create the sound of an electric guitar, from picks, strings, pickups, scale length, finishes, tuners, tailpieces, through preamp, power amp, speaker cabinet...

...and each chapter dissects the concept of tone with different combos of amp andd guitar. For example, "Club Jazz," "British Invasion," "American Garage," "The Jimi Rig," "Chicago Blues"...

...and the included CD is good stuff too.

There are alnico pickups. They look like steel and are wrapped in center of the windings with the polepieces. Or..sometimes they are on the bottom, hiding the poles.

There are ceramics. These look like the ones on your refridgerator.

Some pickups companies offer a combination of both magnet per pickup. Some companies vary in the degree of magnet power. This lets the string vibrate more.

There could be more types. That's all I got.

The only explanation I've found online so far:

Other pickup design features being equal, magnets with lower field strength (AlNiCo-II, for example) tend to generate a lower output signal with a warm tone and soft attack on the notes. Stronger magnets, such as AlNiCo-V tend to deliver high output signal, a bright tone and sharp attack.

Reading this post has got me curious now too. So I guess based on that little tidbit of info I found, if anyone knows which magnets are stronger and weaker, that would be at least a partial answer to waycool's original question.

Well until then, I am gonna browse around and see what I can find. I'm certain there is an article somewhere online that will have an answer to this question.
