I'm currently collecting everything I need for a decent home studio and I ran across a set of speakers at Tuesday Morning of all places for $80. http://www.amazon.com/Sierra-Sound-Studio-Ins5B-Speaker/dp/B000UCJQTY

I think they could be a good option for Studio Monitors seeing as my budget is really tight and I may have to shell out most of it for a Mac Mini, Apogee Interface and Logic Pro (since my Dad works at Apple we get a break on the price, plus Christmas is fast approaching :D ). Does anyone know of any good cheap Studio Monitors that are of a more mainstream brand? I want to do some more research before I jump on those other ones. I have them on 24 hour hold so I have until tomorrow to make up my mind.

Hey Texas, I use the Duet, and the Logic, for monitors, I got these...
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/navigation/fostex-recorders-headphones-audio-recording-equipment-studio-monitors-subwoofers-recording-pro-audio?N=100001+201144+338382

I think they are kind of middle of the road, and serve my amateur recording well.

Good luck, I think you will have a blast recording with Logic.

Look up the term "nearfield monitors" on the great Google mystic ball :)
I included one hit above :)

Studio monitors are designed to be used very close up, ie: maybe 3 feet apart and your ears at the point forming a equilateral triangle with them.
They form a very small sweet spot where the imaging is perfect.
Normal speakers are not usually designed to be used this way.

There are many out there in all price ranges.

I've heard a few people mention they liked the M-Audio Studiophile AV40s

I've never heard them myself, so do not know what they are like
also have never dealt with MusiciansFreind but I spotted their AV40 package
Comes with the monitors, a mic and headphones of some kind .

Might be worth a look see.

Hi Texas!

M-Audio and Fostex are always a safe bet, also the cheaper KRK Rokit series is worth a try. If you need really cheap solutions check out edirol or emu gear. Although I nearly always recommend the M-Audio gear since it's great quality for money.

All the best for the recording & mixing! Make sure your room is acoustically well-balanced, otherwise you're liable to mess up your mixes however "good" your gear.

Cheers

-Nutter

Ya agree, I like the KrK ROKit 5's they are the ones I have,
Got mine on a boXing day (week, month now it seems) sale last year.

I really liked the KrK VXT's in the store but the price takes a big jump up.

With all the small monitors they are lacking in the bottom end, not a big issue unless you really like music with the heavy thump. For that a sub could be added, so far I have not felt the need for one..

The sales of boXing are not far away, might be an idea to hold out for a few weeks and see what bargoons you can find!

Well, since my Dad was also looking for a stereo to connect to his AirPort Extreme we split the cost 50/50 and got them today. So I technically paid $40 for them.

As far as plugging in an iPod and listening goes they sound great. They're really bassy, which something I really like when I'm listening to music but I have some reservations about that when it comes to mixing. I used to mix with a pair of headphones which sounded great, but were also very bass heavy and as a result there was never enough bass when I was listening through my iPod or car stereo. So I'll have to keep that in mind.

But for $40 it was a steal and it'll hold me over until I can afford a pair of M-Audio AV 40s or even something better. And then I can just use these for the purpose they were intended, as an iPod stereo. I tried them with my turntable too, but they weren't any louder than the old Nakamichis I have it going into. I really just need speakers that were intended to be used with a turntable and a turntable which isn't ancient. Something with a USB cable.
