I've never even been in the same room with a Gibson Thunderbird Bass. They look damn nice. I wonder if they are muddy, like a Ripper/Grabber. Maybe they have more of the piano tone?

Never played an early model Steinberger bass. Is there even a difference in composite resin..and regular old graphite?

A '51-'53 Precision. How does 60 year old Ash sound? I bet all the notes have found the absolute best spots for vibration at this point in the bass' life.

...mid 70's Spector NS Bass. They used Dimarzio pickups in the first "production run". Gotta be better than the EMGs used now IMO. I've seen the guy from Loverboy with one. That's about it.

TGS if you ever play a pre CBS Strat you'll want one especially the '62-'65 "L" series, they were the best sounding and most comfortable playing Strats ever made.Anyway of all the Strats I've played the L series are the best in my book.I haven't played any of the reissues to do a real comparison but if they sound and/or play as great as my '65 they are great guitars.

That's what I'm afraid of. Maybe one of these days I'll con the folks at Guitar Center into thinking I have money so I can play one. I plan to at very least play some of the Custom Shop Strats there next time I go. A used Custom Shop reissue wouldn't be out of the realm of future possibilities if I keep saving what I make at work. :)

Rickenbacker 360. Only saw one for sale in my life where I live. Never got the chance to try it out.

+1 to that. The one that I did see was way over my head price wise. I could have played if I had wanted, but my hands were not worthy to touch it.

I would love to try a 360 12-String, but I've never even seen one (in person). Also one of those Gibson robot guitars. They seem stupid, but I'm very curious about them.

A double neck. I would love to pick one up and see what I can do with it.

also, although this may sound stupid, but I've been wanting to pick up an SX strat and others from that brand to see if they're crap or for real. I keep hearing how great they are but just can't believe that they're that good. Curious, but not curious enough to buy one to see. Maybe someone I know will buy one and I'll just pick up theirs.

I've never played a Gibson les Paul, or an original 50's or 60's fender strat......

Soon I will hopefully.

Back in the early 80s the guitarist with Sam Moon's band offered to trade a Mosrite 6/12 double neck for my Vox Phantom XII but I declined,I still wonder if I did the right thing.

Wow. You folks are really stimulating a bunch of thoughts. First, to answer the query line of the thread:

A Gretsch Country Gentleman. About a 1972, preferably.

And to a much, much, much, much, much lesser extent, a Taylor T-5.

Now, comments based on previous entries in this thread.

'Also never played a Telecaster until the day of buying the one which has been in the harem for 10 years. That trite example of love at first sight, hold and pick, applies right here. 'Was not going to leave the store without that guitar.

The Mosrite Mk I is to the Stratocaster what a Ferrari is to a Corvette. 'Totally completely can't understand why Mosrites are not more popular. It's been this experience, most M owners are in love and lust with theirs.

'Was told a double neck is about attitude, and that can be one way to take it (think Page-Zeppelin). The other is to purely enjoy going between a 20-fret SG and an SG-12 without having to switch instruments, and is much more real than turning the knob on a Variax or VG Stratocaster (think Gerry Beckley of America).

The Thunderbird is as excellent as its reputation. Neck "sticks out" about 2 frets further than a Precison or Jazz Bass, so your natural hand position is 2 frets high, if you are a Fender player.

I'd love to try a Rickenbacker 360/12 and a late 50s Les Paul.

With acoustics I'd love to have a go on a gibson Blues King.

Oh and the Les Paul I'd want to try standing in front of a Marshall Plexi stack!
