Sorry mate a watt is a watt, the same as a volt is a volt and a ampere is a ampere.

20 - 30 watts of tube goodness should easily be sufficient for your needs.

You're comparing a current device and a voltage device. My 6 watt Champ totally smokes my 30 watt GDec as well as an old 15 watt SS Guild porch weasel I have. A watt is a watt but I drowned out a 100 watt Frontman 212R two weeks ago with a 20 watt tube amp and was asked to crank it back a bit. The "percieved" volume difference is very real. My 74 Champ can also keep up with 25 watt SS amps with no problem. A tube amp has more usable power than a solid state amp. Tube amps are also measured in RMS rather than Peak Music Power or whatever standard SS amps feel like using. There are a lot of factors involved. Turn a solid state amp to ten and your ears get assaulted with raspy nasty distortion. Crank a tube amp and you get that sweet natural distortion that you will only get from vacuum tubes.

For all the gigs I've done in small venues, like I said 20-30 watts are all you need. I know I gigged with a 100 watt SF Twin for over 30 years. It was great for large auditoriums and festivals and horrible in small clubs. I could never get it to a nice level where everything clicked in a small club.

Hi niki :)

Could there be other factors at play that could make one amp with exactly the same wattage louder than another? Things like signal path, electrical components like transformers and transistors, speaker effiency, etc.

ETA: Hey niki, I just read the second link you posted in this thread and got my questions answered. Thanks, pal! :)

Yeah but the difference isnt constant. It doesn't occur in all transistor amps. Get a well matched speaker to the tran amp and it will sound just as loud as a valve amp of the same rating.

Likewise, not all transistor amps are created "equal".

I've heard new solid-state 400-watt and larger bass rigs that didn't move near the air as my brother's vintage Sunn Coliseums (320 watts) or his Acoustic 370s (250 watts). The current generation of IC power chips with their low-voltage torroidal power supplies pushing phalanxes of 10-inch speakers don't seem to have the "stones" of yesterday's dinosaurs with their banks of TO3-cased Motorola transistors fed via DC-coupled power supplies and wired to man-sized cabs stuffed with 15's and 18's.

Absolutely, it's the one reason I won't give up on tran amps.

Someday, someone is going to get one right.

why not rent a few different amps and drag 'em along to practice with you and try a few out? you'll spend a little bit of money figuring out what amp not to get, it'll be cheaper in the long run to only buy an amp you really like...

Proves a point apparently.

If you spend the same amount of energy and effort into designing a tran amp that people put into designing the great valve amps. Instead of just throwing a load of bits together, because they will do the job. You'll end up with a good sounding amp.

Personally I look forward to the day when we can wave byebye to the glass bottles.
Everything will be a lot easier to lift

15 watts may be alright in the smallest of venues but unless they are miked they're not much good for cutting through the mix with a full band setup.20 watts and up should do pretty good though. The Marshall Haze and Class 5 are great amps and can get a nice bluesy tone.

If you play the blues be sure and road test a Peavey Classic 30 and a Mesa Boogie 525 before you make up your mind. 8)

Thanks for all the responses guys. Sounds like 30 watts is gonna give me a good amp when I do get the chance to pick one up.
