Have any of you had this surgery?... and if so what was your experience? It looks like like its come down to me having it or risking further nerve damage according to my Doctor.I'm pretty sketched out about having it done but I also don"t want to be worse off down the road.He said it was a pretty lengthy recovery time with lots of physical therapy.I am at the point it is now causing me daily and nightly problems. I am bummed out about this big time.

Crying or Very sad don't be bummed out about this big time Eric.
My little sister had surgery on both wrists and it got better.

If I may chime in on this one. For me I just wish I had done it sooner. Just make sure you have the new way they do it like I had done. Instead of scrapping out the tunnel they remove the whole tendon and I was told it would never come back. I had both hands done; one at a time and it sure did cut my sex life in half for awhile.

At first blush the problem with my hands appeared to be carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis but upon further investigation it was found to be a neuro muscular condition caused by the muscles in my rotator cuff impinging on the nerves that occupied the same path. This was from my weight training years ago coming back to haunt me.It seems that over time the muscles that I built up years ago shortened considerably and caused pressure between the nerves and bone and my guitar playing exasperated the condition.Acupuncture has helped somewhat but a new chiropratic treatment along with excercises has helped immensely. Is there any chance that your condition may not be carpal tunnel?Anyway if surgery is the only option it should help greatly as my brother in law had it done after loosing much use of his hands and now after the surgery and physio his hands are a lot better.

Well...I had an EMG (nerve conduction test ) and he said it was for sure severe Carpal Tunnel Syndrome . I will have to have both done. They only do one at a time though. It just seems like alot of down time.He never mentioned about removing the whole ligament just said it was done endoscopacly instead of cutting my palm wide open  Thanks for the replies....keep em coming.

Hey Eric, go for it, the sooner the better. I'm a car mechanic and I went through this about ten years ago. A few months after the surgery I began to feel the same problems in my other hand. But based on my experience I changed a few things about my way of using tools and the pain went away alone. Now I know that we do not share the same working habits but I wanted to say that I have had a positive experience with the surgery. Good luck.

My wife had the surgery on both hands. This was about ten years ago and there was about 3 months between both. Today she is pain free and has 100% of her normal usage back.

Go for it, technology has advanced a lot in the past ten years!

what kind of problems? what symptoms are you having?
this could be an issue with all of us that can effect our playing at some point in our lives.

Well I used to wash parts in solvents without using gloves, that is a major no no, of course now gloves are a must in presence of gasoline, oil, solvents and so on. I also used to strike on tools with the middle of my palm (where the carpal tunnel is) that is another major no no. I use big gloves when using impact wrenches and other air powered tools. I also avoid repetitive movements involving strenght from my hands. For me, the problem was a loss of sense of cold/hot from my left hand. From time to time also I would feel my hand getting numb, and sometimes in the middle of the night, I would wake up instantly with the feeling of a burning iron stabbed into my left palm, very freaky. But with any of these symptoms, I only had to shake my left hand for a few seconds and everything would return to normal. What decided me to go on with the surgery was that the symptoms would resume very often, like I could shake my hand and be OK for a few days but at the end, I would be OK only for a few minutes and one of the symptoms would kick in again. There, I hope that I covered everything. I also want to say that I know a few people who had the surgery and no one had a bad experience with it.

I am having complete numbness in my right hand and arm pretty much all day and at night it gets worse and is very painful. It wakes me from a dead sleep.I try to shake it out but it only helps temporarily and goes right back to that same feeling.
I feel like when I pick something up like a cup of coffee for instance or any hand tools and it feels like I have a grip on it ,than it just slips outta my hands.I can't pick up anything heavy at all ( no hand or finger strength) .I am right handed so I strum with my right but have trouble even holding the pick or finger picking. It hurts to fret with the left hand cause I cannnot apply enough pressue for the chords or notes to ring true....Man this a bummer right now.Looks like I may have to hone the harmonica skills while I recover from this ordeal.

Can't wait to see what technology will have done to thumbs a few year down the road. I envison that hand surgery is going to be a rather popular specialty.

By the way...KC's comment really knocked me out. With that kind of attitude, he'll be OK. 8)
Doc

I have been thinking and praying about this alot!! ... and since it is really negatively effecting the quality of my life I am gonna go for it .I have done alot of research and asking lots of people about their experience with it and i think the pros out way the cons for me.The constant numbness and pain is just driving me nuts.I am just bummed cause I will most likely not be able to play guitar for a while. It's bad enough I can't do the things I need to, much less the things I want to.I guess the thing I am most sketched about is the possibility that my hands could be worse after having it done.I will keep ya posted as the surgery date gets closer. Thanks for everyones input and I could use some serious good mojo/prayers that this goes well for me.
Thanks everyone
