Electro-harmonix Metal Muff is the absolute best pedal for your money, I also like the Boss Metal Zone

The Keely modded Metal Zone is pretty cool. I find the stock one pretty much useless, unless you dig fizzyness.

I've used the same Electro Harmonix Big Muff Pi since 1972,it creates gobs of violin like sustain and you can get weepy or downright raunchy, raspy distortion from it and the new ones with the tone wicker are supposed to be the cat's meow.

When I was younger and still into metal, I used to use a DigiTech "Grunge" pedal, up until the point when I embraced a style-change and gave it to a friend of mine. For distortion though, I guess I'd say it's alright.

You can get some nice heavy tones out of the MXR Zakk Wylde pedal. And IMO it sounds better than the overly compressed type of tones of the Boss Metal Zone. YMMV

To me you still cannot beat the distortion created by a good high gain tube preamp.

Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde. It's probably the most versatile pedal I've ever played, it can literally go from Wes Montgomery style jazz to full blown metal. That's why I've had one on my board since I was 14. It's lasted through every kind of music I've been into, and my tastes have changed a lot from when I was 14. It also sounds great along with a TS-808. Layer the overdrives and it sounds huge.

If you want something fuzzy try a RAT. I have a Vintage RAT which I like a lot.

For really heavy stuff I'd recommend a Boss Metal Zone or Metal Core pedal, but they're one trick ponies.
