after setting the saddles as low as they can go, the action is still to high
from the 7th-20th. its way high. there is a slight relief in the neck.
im wondering if its time to shim the neck?
if so what is a good material to use to make the shim out of?

its a one-of by carvin.
no that measurement is far off from average.
it might be average for somebody who players in
the lower register all the time.

I've never seen a bass with action as low as you would like that didn't have a neck that was straighter than most. Try using light strings first. 40's will lower the pull a bit. You really don't want to tweak the truss rod too much. Quarter turn at full pitch very slow, let it set overnight. Maybe another the next night. Don't mess with it at all if you have to use strength to turn it. That's most important 'cause the rod will probably grind into the wood if overdone. Could pop up the fretboard, or even crack the neck toward the upper frets.

Shimming the neck is a bad idea. Carvins are too nice for that, dude.

I say try the .40's. Let the bass sit for a couple days. I bet that will give you what you want. Maybe just live with it other than that.

I had a new, very expensive bass at one time that never had ultra low action or a completely straight neck. I'm just letting you know your bass is still quality even if you can't get the results you're after.

dan thanks for the advice and compliments.
the action is just to high still. you can almost slide a ink pen under these strings at this point above the 12th.
i honestly dont mind shimming the neck if it will help my cause.
the size strings that are on it are a guess honestly, i just dont know.

Those American Standards from 1995-1999 are priced fairly right now. Very well made instruments. Saw one in great condition at GC for like, $600.

well for one they are one of the last all american made companies left.
two, they make an amazing guitar.
3, their guitars cant be beat for quality craftsmanship and beauty
VS price range.
lets looksee shall we?

http://www.carvinguitars.com/customshop/boltneck.php

that high action we are dealing with is because of a bridge switch
that i thought i wanted some yrs ago. it was never completed
and im just getting interested in doing so.

what saddles are you using?
from the 7th-20th. its way high. there is a slight relief in the neck.
that could happen
im wondering if its time to shim the neck?
is the neck straight? If not straighten the neck carefully. A shim or shims won't help if you don't straighten the neck.
if so what is a good material to use to make the shim out of?
I have used a mesh type material collected from bass guitars I have worked on in the past.

your asking if the neck is straight.
as in what exactly?
there is a slight relief in the neck that i can take out if i need to.
its not tweaked or twisted that ive measured or see.
im thinking the neck need shimmed.
im gonna try that this weekend to see for sure.

way cool jr, Bro when you look down the neck from the headstock to the body the neck should look straight, like an arrow or a pool cue, like your Tele or your Strat, your Fender bass neck should be straight. Let us know if a shim helps.
