You would be surprised how many people quit learning, simply because they have a guitar that plays terrible.
Get the best you or you parents can afford but show them you're going to work hard at it.

your so right.
i too think that the more the person is proud of the gear they have the more they will use it. once they get the opinion its junk it will get little play time. im not saying run out there and get a CS strat but there are plenty of squier and MIM strats out there to fit any budget. craigslist is a good place to start looking. as was trying to be funny above but serious at the same time. if you want a new guitar, put yourself in a situation where its a need and not only a want.
take lessons and get the guitar teacher on your side after a few lessons.
join the band at school. (my school has 3 guitar players in the band)
no they didnt do the marching thing but the in school assemblies and they likes they played. they even started the counties first in school blues club
with the teacher and got fantastic results from it.
there are more ways than to just walk up to the parents and ask.

I paid 75% of the price on a nice Squier Strat starter for my son with the agreement that if he stuck with it, it's his, if not, it's mine.

His interest varies greatly, some weeks he's all over it and some not. I'll probably inherit it but hope he sticks with it.

I promised him I'd make the same deal with a nicer guitar too and we'd trade in the Squier if he stuck with it. From the parent's point of view you just don't want to dump the cash into something they won't stick with. Keep working it and they should back you up with something nicer than you have now.

Mastering the guitar is a good thing to do before you upgrade to a better guitar. That way you will know more about which guitar will complement your style. But if you were to ask me I would have to say most likely you have the same virus we all that own Fenders have called Haveanother syndrome, meaning no matter what or how many guitars we have we just have got to haveanother one   :?

Nice, but with me for a Dad he's had plenty of exposure to KISS music and Ace!

The real problem is that he often resorts to the Homer Simpson theory on life "if something is hard, it's really not worth doing!"

He's 17, he's old enough, I was the same way at his age, thought guitar was awesome but I gave up quickly because it was "too hard." Than I played drums for 15 years.

Regardless of the age, there's a certain mindset you have to have to really work at guitar, or maybe any instrument. Face it, us musicians are a little off, shrugging off friends and society to spend hours alone practicing an instrument that will make us popular with our friends and society? 8)

You could always save your money and buy your Squier. I stocked many a milk jug at my job to get my first electric guitar.

Actually i have been playing for several years now (around four) . Two summers ago I convinced my parents to get me a new guitar because my old electric was always out of tune. I had tried out teles but they were out of my price range. I like them a lot. I also have been working hard at it to prove that i need one.

Why you pestering your parents for a guitar? Why not find some weekend work and earn your own?
That's exactly what I did years ago.

My first guitar was a Avon Rose Morris (Rose Morris were the sole Marshall distributor till 81). A £50 les paul copy. I had that as a 13year old. When I was 15 I talked my mom into lying about my age so I could work a summer job. Door to door cold calling.
After 3 weeks I bought the best guitar I've ever played. A Tokai Breezysound. Later I foolishly sold it, bought other junk, sold other junk.

The only other guitars I've ever been given were a £30 Encore strat copy, when I was really down on my luck and the Malibu acoustic I won in January.

The guy who gave me the Encore Strat, I bought him a Yammaha SG2000 a couple of years before hand. So I guess that evens out a bit.
