I think maybe what your parents are trying to say is show improvment, well thats what they say to me a lot.

Just keep up your hardwork and it will pay off

Tanner's advice sounds "right on". I would hope that if you show real initiative and discipline your folks will reward you with a good guitar. It is certainly possible with some hard work to get good enough to impress them. If that doesn't work you can always work for the money. Perhaps then it will mean even more to you.

Good luck. Patience and hard work do pay off.

when i was a wee lad back in the 60's my parents got me a musicmaster. they told me if i would practice hard, they would get me a new guitar in a few years.

2 years later, i was rewarded with a stratocaster.

so work hard- good things will happen.

[b]My first guitar was a $25 (expensive for that time) Harmony acoustic which I gerry rigged with primitive DeArmond pickups and contrived to wire in a 2 pickup configuration. After about 2 years, and it appeared that my mates and I were going somewhere musically, I invested $75 of my OWN EARNED money in a new Danelectro short-horn, and Danelectro Centurion amp which I played live and recorded with. When one of my bandmates swapped out his '58 Strat and Concert amp for a new Fender Jaguar and Dual Showman, I became the 'swappee. I used that Strat professionally for 10 years. What happened to it is a story told several times in these pages which I will not retell now.

52 years ago, which is the time approximate I speak of, the only Strat you could buy was the equivalent in dollars of today's American Standard. You are fortunate to live in a market where a range of instruments, all bearing that wonderful design, are available to you at a variety of price points.

Today, my Fender 'toys' consist of an '89 Clapton, a Gilmour, a Deluxe VG, and there's a '57 Vintage Hotrod on order. Not only did I master my guitar, I became the master of my fate. On those two things you can rely.

Have patience, practice, play, and persevere. There's much in store for you. Remember...the difference between men and boys is the kind and the price of their toys. Be there!

Rock on.

Doc.

damn i feel like that should have ended with "may the force be with you" or something lol.

just learn to play what you have. take lessons and study.
then get your teacher to talk with the parents with you if there is a new guitar needed. if the teacher also suggests a new guitar how can they say no? use the force luke

I practice like every day though. i have learned 5 songs in like 6 weeks and have maintained a 3.0 gpa at school. I just want a new sound. my sound right now is good but it bores me. A tele would be a step up concidering it would be my first fender (i was gunna get a duo sonic but was impatient and got a michael kelly patriot limited. then the duo sonic came that monday). I love playing fenders to.

edit: the thing is the fender is at the rival store of the guitar i got. If i get a suggestion from the teacher it would come from his store.

Doc's telling you square -- persevere. And if your parents don't "reward" your improving competency, you'll eventually find a way to reward it yourself.

Best of luck!

Arjay

If your current guitar is good enough to play on and you just want a new sound, try a Guitar multi-effects pedal like a Digitech RP 255 or 355. I use an older RP350 and can get about any sound I want including switching the single coil tone to an HB tone. Check it out.

I have an amp it is just a pice of crap that cant produce a sound other than fuzz. and an effects pedal wont work with my mini amp that you plug headphones into.

Hmm- you sound a bit young for the sort of effect that can have on your life.

Playin' a Telecaster ain't like dustin' crops, Kid.

How long have you been playing? Maybe your parents want to make sure it's something you're going to stick with before they spend a few hundred dollars on. There are many kids who start playing guitar only to give it up after a few months.

You're evidently just starting, but one thing all beginners should have is a PLAYABLE guitar, lots of cheap guitars can hardly be mastered by even a master.
You would be surprised how many people quit learning, simply because they have a guitar that plays terrible.
Get the best you or you parents can afford but show them you're going to work hard at it.
