I'd really love to hear your modified amp as I'm well used to the sound of my Blues Jr. and I'm quite satisfied with it but I've heard that some of these mods are spectacular.Any chance on putting a side by side comparison on Youtube?

Tell us about the mods you had done to it?

I recently helped my buddy find a Blues Jr and the one I picked up for him had a Celestion Greenback speaker added to it and Fromel mods to the electronics. That thing is a blues beast now.

Blackcatbone....

Here is the list:

2. Heyboer Transformer
3. Twin stack mod
4. Orange Drop capacitors
5. Presence pot.
6. adjustable bias control
7. Carling stand-by switch
8. metal input jack

I am not sure how to post vieos on Youtube, but I'll try to get my son to help me out.

Beaubs, I think that you will be very happy with the mods, probably be the best BJr that you have ever heard. I did some of the same mods to mine (below), not as much as yours, and I am thrilled with it. The mods really make the amp much more versatile, with more usable range on tone controls and volume. :D

Kept stock speaker and Transformer
3. Twin stack mod
4. Orange Drop capacitors (tone stack and coupling)
6. adjustable bias control (set at about 8.5 watts idle)
Right now, I have a set of 7189 output tubes installed, also have used GT EL84 S Red Label output tubes, either sound great.
7. Carling stand-by switch
Also added Power supply stiffening cap

What kind of output tubes did you use, and what is the idle bias set at on your amp?

I am having JJ EL84's installed. Also, I told the tech to set the bias control at an acceptable value. I will ask him what that value is when I pick it up (I am no technical wizard so I am trusting his expertise in the area).

Reading this thread is a great education. I have a stock Blues Jr. And use it only to play at home. What does the twin stack mod do? And - how involved is it to just put in a standby switch?
Can't wait to hear a clip of the modified amp. Hope you can get one out here.
Hope it exceeds your expectations.

Hi Cambo,

The "Twin Stack Mod" is really just a jumper wire soldered across 2 of the mid pot terminals, so that it is wired the same way as in the Twin Reverb amp's tone stack. This allows the mids to be dialed out completly, like both the bass and treble tone pots already do, giving more control of the tone. http://billmaudio.com/wp/?page_id=58 The standby switch is really easy to install, using push-on terminals, it's just a matter of moving some wire terminals around. http://billmaudio.com/wp/?page_id=327 If you get the parts from Billm, they come with instructions. :D

shimmilou,

Thanks for the links. Very cool. I will certainly be ordering at least a standby switch from them. Turning a mechanical engineer loose on a guitar amp is a real scary thing but at least I know enough to unplug it first. :0)

Beaubs,

Hoodwinked - a great term I have not heard in years.

I went to the web site to order the standby switch and a note said he was gone for a week and no ordering was possible at this time. Sounds like the man is extremely busy. Web site seems real informative and I'll bet he does a great job.

Hope. You don't have to wait too long.

The Blues Jr. I back!!!

I jammed (in my home) most of last evening and I am very pleased with the results.

Again here is the list of the mods that I had done:

1. Eminence Texas Heat speaker
2. Heyboer Transformer
3. Twin stack mod
4. Orange Drop capacitors
5. Presence pot.
6. adjustable bias control
7. Carling stand-by switch
8. metal input jack
9. New JJ preamp and output tubes

Here is what I know: the bass response is much bigger and less "boxy", if that makes sense. It is bigger and rounder than before. The high end sparkles now instead of sounding sharp or shrill (especially at high volumes) - the presence pot is the main reason for this. The amp is a bit louder than before. The tone stack has greater variable control and this has allowed me greater tone variation. As a whole the amp has more clean headroom. I am very very pleased so far.....I better be because the cost of this Blues Jr. has grown since my initial purchase. I now have over $800 into it (including amp ourchase). I am probably pushing the edge on value to performance at this time. I have learned a great deal about amps and electronics though....so you can add free schooling into that too.

All in all I a pleased and this amp is a keeper!

For those of you that want to hear it, I still have to work with my son on recording and posting on the Forum. Don't hold your breath though as I am not to good at that technical stuff.....

Beaubs :)
