No one complained when Joe Bonamassa got his own Gibson signature guitar even though he's only been playing Gibsons for a relatively short time.

Stop looking at the sig model as guitar players and look at it like a business. There are more people know who the Jonas Brothers are then there are people who know who Joe Bonamassa is.

I like John Mayer ok, but how does he deserve more signature models than Buddy Guy or Robert Cray? If Mayer deserves an entire line of signature model Strats, why doesn't Tab Benoit have a single Telecaster Deluxe in his name?

+100000000

I didn't want to be the first one to say it though.

It seems that Gibson has no shame......or credibility. As long as Mad Henry is at the helm Gibson will be releasing more and more dogs.

Just my 2 cents on the signature guitar syndrome. I think that there are really 2 things going on. You have "signature guitars" as many of us know them which are more lifetime achievement award type guitars. Then you have what I call "artist appreciation" guitars. True signature guitars are the ones that are around for longer than a run of 300 or 500 or whatever but actually become a part of the company's standard offerings. I would put the Clapton, Gilmour, SRV, Beck, Cray, Guy strats in here, along with Gibson's Lucille and the Ibanez Jem. The "artist appreciation" guitars are those limited run guitars for select artists (sometimes you wonder if the people really are artists). These are the guitars that you primarily see Gibson putting out these days. I don't see them as having the same clout as a true signature guitar because they aren't a standard offering.

I personally don't see a problem with these "artist appreciation" guitars. I can't count the number of times that I wished a guitar company offered a particular something and actually didn't buy a guitar because of it. I could care less if they have a guitar for the Jonas Brothers, but at least they decided to test the waters for that market. It just may be that something that someone else has always wanted but couldn't find until then. Plus, you can't really sell what you don't offer. The great thing too is that these are such limited runs that it won't be difficult to change the serial number on the majority of these guitars and sell them as regular guitars.

So I think that if you look at these guitars in that sense, you preserve the integrity of the "signature model" guitar and still get to sell as many "artist appreciation" guitars as you can think of. I do think that they could be a little more discriminating as to who is called an artist. :D

Edit: Why is there no Keith Richards signature tele?

Well, I know that Best Buy sells a Taylor Swift model guitar, made by, who'd have guessed, Taylor Guitars! But I am holding out for the Lady GaGa All Meat guitar, USDA approved, of course. Also saw in the latest Guitar World that some 12 year old kid's most wanted guitar is the Gibson Don Felder 12/6 string axe. Really.

Still doesn't stop the disgust though bro.

It's such a shame that these things are business based. The world would be a finer place if signature models were given on merit or talent.
