Tune in to ABC's Good Morning America between 8:00-9:00 a.m. tomorrow (Friday, July 20) and see a special performance by John Mayer on a historic day for his special guest, the one and only Eric Clapton!

Friday is the first day the limited edition Eric Clapton Crossroads Stratocaster® guitar is available to the public. Become a part of the legacy...
• Only 100 will ever be built
• John Mayer was Fender's first customer for this limited edition guitar
• All proceeds go to benefit Eric's Crossroads rehabilitation center in Antigua

I am a huge John Mayer fan. I have been to three shows so far. His guitar playing is clean and meaningful. His Lyrics are heartfelt and on a differest level from anyone else that is out there right now.

Turns out that Mayer's Crossroads Antigua guitar is a one-off built for him as a surprise by the CS. It has a vintage finish neck, rosewood board and Mayer's pickups. The rest of the guitar is to Clapton specs including the Crossroads Antigua logo.

If you look carefully at the video you will see that the headstocks and fretboards are different.

Actually is was 1 of 30...you can still purchase one for 30k on Fender.com...but He bought number one, which EC painted and designed himself personally. But, you are right....John Mayer likes rosewood. (This info is on Fender.com)

Suggest the webmaster post the URL to Mayer's blog so that we all can know, in his words, why the guitar he played on Friday morning appeared slightly different from the one in Eric's hands.
Seems that, after all the press releases were said and done, the CS had built him a one-off of the limited 100 Crossroads Antigua guitars.

I saw an episode of Abbey Road on the Sundance channel a couple weeks a go and they featured John Mayer in the studio. He performed Gravity and a couple of other great tunes. I was lucky to find it when I did, because I was only channel surfing at the time.

Roger on the lucky. I happened on it the same way. I have not followed him closely in the past but was most pleased with his skills in that session. He appears to be quite versatile but seems to minimize his soloing on his recordings...at least those I've heard getting air play.

His work with Clapton on GMA has been garnering a bit of yadaya in these forums. Clapton was a guest on Mayer's gig and you can see that by the positioning of the principals on the stage as well as the solo time. It was actually John giving the nod to Eric in terms of the tone of his guitar.

In that regard I recommend you to two rather impressive guitar solos by Eric: the first: "Rambling" on "EC Was Here", and "If I Needed Someone" on "George Harrison in Japan". Clapton is playing the original 'Blackie' on the former, and the generation I Lace Sensor powered signature Strat on the latter.

Take note of the tone setup for each of those live performances. You can knock your brains out trying, but unless you know the secret recipe for those settings, particularly if the signal is going through the board, I don't know how anyone is going to capture that in their practice environment.

I have listened to a lot of Clapton in the past forty years, but the sound of that guitar on the Harrison CD is nothing short of amazing, and it's a one-off. I've heard followup performances, and he never did it twice the same way.

Save your pennies and keep your eyes peeled for a plum. My first Clapton was a used Lace Sensor Blackie in amazing condition. I traded it up for my CS guitar which I have described elsewhere. Now I'm not so sure if I should have let that guitar go. I understand it has become a new collectible.
