First of all, JOHN MAYER F"N ROCKS!!!
OK?
Second, Black, White, Yellow, Green, whatever color you are, if you have talent & can express yourself in a way that other people are moved or enjoy what you do, then who cares what friggin' color you are? I enjoy music of all kinds as long as it's heartfelt & passionate, regardless of styles!!! If not for "white" blues kids from England, most American musicians wouldn't even have known about how great the American Blues players really were, so give credit where credit is due!!! Emulation is a form of respect & if your'e a good player or singer who "sounds" like another artist but can pull it off & people dig it, then that's ALL THAT MATTERS!!!
Third, getting back on topic, John Mayer appeals to a large audience of both musicians & non-musicians (OK, teenage girls, LOL) & if he can expose all of them to blues or acoustic music then all the better!!! My guitarist in my band is an acoustic EXPERT, he can tell you what key, fingerings, tuning or where the capo is on ANY acoustic recording. Anyway he has recently become a huge fan of Mr. Mayers playing AND songwriting. This from an "old-school" guy!!! Great!!! Talent is talent & thats why John has a recording contract & is selling CD's & is out on the road all the time. If he was just "stealing Jimi & Stevie Ray" licks then he wouldn't be that popular now, would he?
Fourth, there are only 11 notes in music, how many times can you play the differant combinations before you repeat something? It's all been written or played by someone before you so don't criticize someones "orginality" because there is no true originality anymore, just differant sounds effects combos or whatever. I thought when I moved to Nashville 4 years ago people would be playing all these cool guitar non-standerd chords & ripping it up. But you know what? They all still play the same G, D, C A & E chords that we all use to write there songs & you know what? THey sound great, a good song & performance is good no matter what chords you use, it's all about expression & emotions. Rock is dead & everything after 1980 is just a rehash of those same combinations, but now it's done with differant effects & production techniques.
Now, as far as my experience with John Mayer, I didn't think that much of him from his first 2 CD's. THEN, I saw him on Austin City Limits where he invited Double Trouble & Buddy Guy to sit in with him. WOW!!! I was FLOORED!!! And so were the other 2 musicians watching with me at the time, and one of them was another "old-school" player!!! After that, I kept my eye on him. I almost bought "TRY!" when it came out but passed several times. I heard all the buzz about the new CD "Continuum" & bought it the week it came out. Man was I impressed!!! The SONGWRITING in particular floored me!!! Yes, he could've stretched out a little more in certain places on the CD, but overall I could'nt have been more enamored of that album. AFter that I went & bought all his CD's except for his furst demo recordings. And "TRY!", man I wished I had bought it when it came out now, that record kicks $@!!!! To be able to play & SING that stuff at the same time, plus the backup band of Pino & Jordon was AWESOME!!! I plan on seeing him live again in a month & can't wait!!!

Well put... when I read that post about originality I was like "R U SERIOUS"... i will admit john's soloing reflects allot of SRV and Hendrix... how ever his song writing and cord structures are amazing... Allot of his chords are some of the hardest strecthes I've done... I've been a JM fan since the beginning... he introduced me to blues music and blues greats like buddy guy....you can try to knock him but when it comes down to it .. JM is a amazing songwriter... great guitarist.. gives credit where credit is due.. and respects his elders.... plus thats he's down with Kanye West Maurek... ha ha

I guess if someone respectfully disagrees with you in this forum, that gives you permission to make ad hominem attacks and make racial slurs against them, eh nkb???

I thought racist insults were not permitted in this site. Guess I was wrong.

John Mayer is pretty much an amazing musician and songwriter. I've been playing acoustic guitar for a few years now and have learned a few of his songs. I'm just blown away by what he comes up with and I'm still trying to figure out how he does it. Now I'm listening to his blues recordings and noticed that he jumped right up there with the greats almost immediately. Great voice and guitar skills. Definitely a creative take on the blues genre. And saying that he's copying SRV and Hendrix is pretty much bulls***. He looked up to players like that as a kid and has evolved his styler around their style. Of course it sounds similar, but in the end it's his own style.

Your apology is appreciated. That said, I'm sure that radio personality Don Imus intended the comment that resulted in his recent scandal to be a "joke" as well. :D Please watch yourself!

What exactlty did nkb2575 SAY that WAS racist? If you go back you'd see it was Maruuk who started this thread with his comments that many of us felt were off base. To compare nkb2575 to Don Imus is also kinda dumb, I feel that all of us who've replied to Maruuk's post have been more than polite & kind considering the sensitive nature of the topic. Please go back & read ALL the posts related to this before you make such statements.

I've followed the entire thread, so am well aware of where we're at. I'm glad you weren't offended and I can't say that it really affected my own day one way or another either; however, I received several immediate complaints about nkb's post to my "abuse hotline" e-mail address. So ... this is the last warning before we are forced to lock this thread and move on. Posts about John Mayer's musicianship, good. Posts about John's or forum members' races, bad. Follow these simple rules and we'll all be happy. :D

Then I agree, let's go ahead & lock this thread & start a new one based on the actual topic!!! Wow, who knew Mr. Mayer could be so controversial, he looks like such a nice boy, LOL!!!

I think he is amazing, his lyrics, everything, and he is the master of guitar. He is one of my favorite musicians of all time. I like practically every song of his, though i think that 'Vultures' is the best. Plus I also probably like him because he's from Connecticut like me =].
