But you are absolutely right about your "contracts" point. We need another age of the troubador.

Huh, interesting. I answer a simple question about an artist quite honestly, and I expect in this forum to be treated with respect and fairness. If someone disagrees with me, I am expecting a retort like, "I completely disagree with you, because blah blah blah." That's how it's supposed to work.

Instead I get called a racist, I get ad hominem attacks which I might point out are violations of this forum's very stringent and correct rules. I get basically a bunch of hate directed at me personally.

You guys ought to read the forum rules again. They prohibit all of the above. Come back after you've agreed to behave in a manner consistent with Fender's very fair and reasonable rules of forum usage.

Then we can discuss Mr. Mayer, and only Mr. Mayer, and not me. Ok? Thank you.

Don't apologize for your tastes Slide! Besides I have been playing for 3 years now and I can't even play SmoKe on the Water very well, no way I would try any Goo Goo. Here is the proof http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91wKceCSc8s

Again, we have no truck with your opinion of Mayer, but clearly - and demonstrably - several of us found part of your post worrying. We did ask for an explanation and you have declined to provide one - your choice. And I see no ad hominem attacks anywhere in this thread.

Don't worry, The Goo Goo Dolls are originally from about 4 hours down the Erie Canal from me. Listened to 'em for along time in the beginning. Good band. They got alot of flack from some of their older fans for some of their softer stuff, that came later in their career. The fact is that their early stuff was good music and so was their softer stuff later on. Well-crafted songs. Alot of people get caught up on image and genre, I learned long ago that a good song is where you find it.

Maruuk, your comments were distasteful to say the least. No one attacked you. No one belittled your dislike for John Mayer. I think you should look at the forum rules again yourself. You don't want to be called out for posting racist comments then don't post racist comments.

So how about John Mayer, I just spooled up the Try! DVD. I really dig it, including his voice.

Were you troubled when Mick Jagger was roundly criticized by many US music critics for "aping" a "Black sound" and prancing around like a "monkey" on stage, which was a veiled allusion to mimicking Black musical artists? Read the articles, hundreds of em. In the entire history of rock n' roll from Elvis to Pat Boone to John Mayer, the issue of Whites awkwardly trying to emulate a "Black" sound has been one of the key controversies in rock music. All at a time when Black artists themselves were starving from being cut out of their royalties by White record owners.

Some critics called the Whites' performances themselves racism. Others said it was more of a tribute. Heck, the debate continues today with Joss Stone and many other White performers trying to sound like something they're not. You can like that or not. But it is and has been a seminal issue in popular music since the beginning. Is it racist to refer to 50 years of controversy? Please. Let's grow up here.

I hear Mayer desperately trying to sing like something he's not, and it's excruciating. If you guys like that, more power to you. We disagree. End of story.

Yes. Absolutely.

Give up for Christ's sake.
