I've been getting into a lot of John Mayer lately.
Both his newer stuff and his old stuff.

What do you guys think of him?

I like him, dudes got some chops. Been to about 4 different Mayer shows, most recently back on June 19th and they get better each time. IMO the JM Trio stuff (Try) is his best CD.

And his Signature Strat looks and sounds awesome. I hear a Limited Edition is set to be released in the Fall

yeah, i can tell he's got a lot of potential he's not using (yet)
he seems to experiment more and more as albums come along.

and i'll check out the trio stuff.

I like the Try album and video. He definately has the chops and persona to go as far as he wants. I guess its up to him as far as direction. I hope he stays with the blues power trio concept for awhile. No need to go back to candy pop imo. He already got his money. His signature guitar is my favorite signature from fender. I like it better then the eric johnson.

Do you know what bothers the hell out of me about this Mayer bloke? It's the fact that he never lets go in the studio! Jeez, that man can play some phenomin....phonmenme....phenomon....some fantastic licks - I am sympathetic to those who have called him The New Slowhand - and yet he holds back that awesome talent when cutting records.

Live, he is just about the best guitarist you can ever hope to see and hear. Incendiary. When's he next over in Blighty?

Obviously a guy on the level of a Danny Gatton (RIP) or especially a Kevin Eubanks makes Mayer's performance look and sound like a 2nd grader. Mayer has learned all his Jimi and Stevie and everybody else's licks by rote and regurgitates them very convincingly. I guess that shows a kind of copy-band talent. As long as he shuts his agonizingly cloying and laughingly over-stylized singing trap. He sets new standards for white guys desperately trying to sound Black or at least hip with all the fake emotion from the glottal area and the phony pronounciations of words to sound dumb and uneducated and Southern. I mean, all white rock guys do that to some extent, but with Mayer it comes off as pure grotesque satire. Play guitar and hire a real singer like Santana, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page have always done.

Yes, not sure I like those comments either. I'd like to see an explanation or an edit to remove the statements - immediately.
