I had one of those "back in the day" that I used with my '68 Bandmaster......

It sounded great and I played it for about five years. But like a doofus, I traded it all in on a Super Plexi half-stack. My loss......

Played through a Leslie in the late 60s a few times, a unique sound, every one is helping with good info, the video was excellent, thanks for posting Mike, Texas, this is all I could come up with:

wiki:
Model 16

The smallest Leslie is the Leslie Model 169, made in 1970. It has a Fender-like speaker body and a rotating foam dispersion block. It was built for rough club touring, was portable, and had "Leslie" written on the front. It was also released later as Fender/CBS's "Vibratone". Stevie Ray Vaughan used this model on the song "Cold Shot" from the album Couldn't Stand The Weather. It can also be heard on Cream's "Badge" and Jimi Hendrix' "Little Wing".

According to Eric Barrett and Gerry Stickels Jimi's equipment manager and roadie respectively the Leslie effect on Little Wing was from a home made rig using only an 8" speaker and cobbled together from a Meccano set and motor of all things. The other songs that SBLS mentioned though used real Leslies as did Jimi in subsequent recordings.

I fell for a salesman's line a while ago and bought the BOSS RT-20.

It is OK as far as it goes.
It (at least mine) inserts a noticeable hiss into the signal when it is on by-pass, it is quiet when active.
Works best with a stereo input signal, I use a stereo chorus just before it to split my signal, and driving 2 amps a good distance apart from each other for best effect.

It does have nice whirling lights to keep you entertained. :)

The Fulltone Mini Deja Vibe 2 MDV2 is seriously cool too.

Here the unit on a pedal board I was trying to DIY a couple of years ago.

I keep hunting for a fully functional Fender Vibratone with its wiring harness/footswitch intact at a price I can handle. (it is basically a Fender brand Leslie)
http://www.nmia.com/~vrbass/vibratone/

I auditioned quite a few rotary simulator pedals before settling on the RT-20, most sounded very artificial.

Good hunting!

Thinking about it, I remember liking the line6 roto-machine back then.
Not great, but about 1/3 the cost of the BOSS rt-20 for an effect that can get real old quick if overused.

Just a little historic note:CBS Musical Instruments bought Leslie when it acquired Fender in '66 as my Leslie is a '66 and the I.D. plate says "Made by CBS Musical Instruments".

Indeed you are correct, GS.

Wow, lots of great information here. I was hoping to get something before my band went back into the studio, but since that's going to be in a couple of days and I don't have a car it looks like that's not going to happen. Which is probably for the best since I don't want to rush this too much.

I know for a fact that if I had something like a Vibratone I'd definitely use it regularly. Not on every song or anything, but maybe more like one or two out of ten. And that goes for all the main styles I play. I really love the rotary speaker sound and I think I probably wouldn't be happy until I had the real thing. And Vibratones are way less expensive than I thought they were (I was thinking more like $1000+). If I can get one for $400-$600 including shipping off of ebay than that's what I think I should do. Obviously I wouldn't be able to get one in time for recording or for the gig, but if I set aside some money for it it might be something I could do in a year or so.

In the mean time a pedal might still be a good idea, especially for portability's sake. And most people probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between that and a real leslie in a pro quality studio recording. But it's still a fairly large amount of money which I might as well save to get the real thing, so I'm still undecided. I really, really want that sound.

Stage footprint remains the biggest obstacle to my finding and buying another one. Many of the venues I play have a smurf-sized stage or minimum band riser at best. I've seen a couple locally on C/L in the $500-$600 range.

Carefull with the ebay ones, many I have looked at have damaged or missing footswitch wiring harness.

The unit is usless without a functioning footswitch.

Kind of wish Fender would bring out a Vibratone RI , I'd probably be one of the fools wating in line at the shop to get one :)

Does anyone make replacement footswitches?

For the money and the footprint, I chose the RT20, and that was after a loooooooong search.

A real Leslie would be better, but at my age the weight and the footprint of the unit have to factor in...

I haven't tried the Fulltone DejaVibe 2, though...hmmm....

You can dial in some great SRV and Leslie sounds with this - - unfortunately this clip doesn't show much of what it's capable of :

I've got one of those myself. I'm amazed at how good it sounds for the money. And that's a good thing because if you don't have an AC adapter, you'll need the bucks you saved to buy batteries. Eats them right up.

I'm intrigued by the Uni-Vibe Stereo Chorus pedal, too but I haven't taken the plunge. I've got an old Boss CE-3 Stereo Chorus that isn't really stereo. It has what amounts to dry and wet output jacks. That's not stereo.
