i use you tube alot when i get stuck on songs. i've got a pretty darn good ear these days but when i get lazy i just cheat off you tube or some tab site. what i usually discover is the use of a capo or just a weird chord i haven't learned.
am i cheating or just using a good source for learning? would you recommend it to a student?

if the end result is you learn the song, then I see nothing wrong with it. dont get caught up in things like is it cheating or if it is ok to use youtube to learn a song, lick, solo or anything else.

Have fun, play guitar, learn the songs you like no matter what method you use to do so. Kick back, and crank up the volume!

As long as the cat gets skinned, it matters not how you accomplish the deed.

Why would it be cheating, because you're not sitting there slaving away hitting one string at a time trying to find that one note that is eluding you? That has to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. There is no cheating. If you don't know something then use whatever you can at your disposal to learn it. I use YouTube religiously to learn songs. It's even better if you can find the artist doing it because it always seems that anyone else doing it is a bastardized version that sounds right, but isn't.

I used to call a capo a cheater until I realized it's a "tool" LOL

It's all about fun my friend. It's no different than someone showing you a lick. I learned some of my favorite blues turnarounds from David "Honeyboy" Edwards. And yes, he showed me back stage at the Pocono Blues Festival.

i started taking guitar lessons in 1960. my instructor showed me how to play hundreds of songs.

is that cheating because i didn't just sit down and try to learn it all by myself? the answer is a resounding no.

to this day, i still watch guitar dvd's to learn something new.

however you learn to play is fine- rock on and have fun

Doesn't matter how you learn the song...as long as you do.

If it's enjoyable it's probably cheating.

I sure hope it isn't cheating!
What would I do otherwise?

Use whatever you can!

I wish I had the internet when I frst started playing. I had to wait for the next issue of Guitar For The Practicing Musician and then track down the songs they featured. Even that was alot more then the guys who had to learn just by listening to a record. I was amazed when the internet came out and I stumbled on OLGA... anyone else remember that site?

maybe it is a dumb question. the reason i asked is because i'm the only one in our band that does it. but, i'm also the youngest member. sometimes i do feel like i'm taking a shortcut.
