I watched "Gimme Shelter" (the film in case you didn't know) again tonight and it made me realize just how much has changed in music during the past 40+ years. I watched "Gimme Shelter" and "Shine A Light" back to back.

Concerts are not the same. Lifestyles are not the same. We will never live through a generation of music like that ever again. Good or bad.

To anyone that has not seen the film, I recommend it, even if you are not a Rolling Stones fan.

Best music documentary of all time? Possibly. As for "Shine A Light" it is no "Gimme Shelter" but it is still an entertaining film. I saw the Stones a few days prior to the filming of "Shine A Light".

The present generation knows no better so it will never happen again.

Have you picked up the 1972 concert DVD "Ladies and Gentlemen the Rolling Stones" ???

It's great!

Both those films are great!
For all the bad rep the Stones get, they're a great band. Who else can go through the amount of drugs, alcohol, women and come out 40 years later in decent shape?

Another nice documentary came out with the re-issue of "Exile on Main Street" last year. Worth a watch.

Looking forward to seeing the re-release of "Ladies and Gentlemen the Rolling Stones" . And to reading Keef's new book...should be a fun read. 8)

Saw them a bunch of times in the early 70's and into the 80's and 90's. Last tour I saw was "Steel Wheels" at a Stadium concert where it was near Hurricane conditions. Stopped going to Stadium shows since. Well, there was a Springsteen show...

The present generation would rather watch a concert on youtube. And they don't even want to take LSD! Silly kids.

Seriously that film is just messed up beyond belief. I would have been scared to be at that event. Drugs + Crowds + Gang members + Security are gang members + Keith Richards still keeps playing even if you are dead... just not a good scene.

Any of the old geezers on this forum attend that concert? It would be interesting to hear a first hand account of that day.
"A day in Hell" is how one of the performers put it,I can't remember who though.
I wasn't there but I remember hearing beforehand how they were getting the Hell's Angels to pull security and were paying them 500 cases of beer....we knew there was going to be trouble, even here in TN., before it happened...no way would I have gone....proved to be true...the lunatics had the keys to the asylum that day.

Ha!

But that was only Keith so he could break his heroin addiction.

Ron Wood deals with Alcoholism and paints.
Charlie Watts is a Cancer Survivor
Mick ...not sure what Mick does other than make money!
Bill Wyman just plays small clubs, last I heard.

saying we'll never see a good era of music again is stupid. yes, the current generation has no idea what they're doing, but thats mainly because all the technology and digital sound effects are coming out lately, studios want to put it into the music other people make

Watch the movie and tell me you think we will ever have another good generation of music lovers.

People do not appreciate music like they used to. You can download it for free and then delete it.

It is disposable. It has no meaning anymore.

Maybe after nuclear war things will change. Up until then, nah... disposable generic music and the people that listen to it.

is it a documentry or an actual concert?
people will one day realize that there throwing away music, only listening to 1 or 2 songs that are massive hits. tell me, anyone hear thought rock music was dead beore the 80's?

EDIT; i admit, if anything good in rock music doesn't happen within the next, say, 15 years, then it'll be screwed, but if you think about rock music just keeps coming back in other forms.

Nevin,
Folks don't wait "in lines" anymore because of Ticketmaster's hold on Touring bands. Unless it's a local band of course. Now they wait "on-line" hoping to get a seat.

I think lots of acts make an impact these days. U2, Springsteen, come to mind. You may not like them but they have a huge following..

Last time I bought a CD was last Saturday for Steve Miller's "Bingo!". I shared my "Porcupine Tree" albums with my buddy who gave me his "Brad Paisley".

Music evolves. While I feel blessed to have been born in the 50's and grew up through the 60's and 70's when Rock was ROCK! I didn't have Satellite Radio, IPods, MTV and Youtube and all the hundreds of channels of cable TV bombarding me with music from every culture imaginable either. Lots of variety out there to pick from and technology makes it easier and easier to get your own music out.

Hey, my Mom thinks music died when Sinatra did! I'll probably feel the same way when all the Beatles, Stones and Who are dead.

I'm not yet wrapped in linen and my grandparents were not australopithecus.
That is, no longer in my 20's but neither in my 60's :o

As far as the birth of Rock and Roll, I arrived too late for the Premiere.

A funny thing happened on the way to the Forum !!
