I've completely given up on FM and AM radio and now listen exclusively to Sirius satellite or Last FM while on the computer. The only time I listen to AM or FM is in the mornings sometimes when I listen to local CBC to catch up on local news.Sirius has great alternative stations and of course its stations devoted to one artist like the Elvis station,Grateful Dead as already mentioned and Bruce Springsteen. There is something in the way of music to appeal to any musical taste as well as 4 comedy stations, 2 Stern stations and various news stations.

Theres a grateful dead channel!!?!!
absolutely! they play entire concerts several times a day, as well as having call-in shows, segments where they allow listeners to play their favorite dead songs, and just 24 hours of dead a day :D

available on sirius and xm.

I like to listen to the music channels on my TV. Blues, classic rock (they even play Rush!!!), '70s, '80s, '90s, whatever. However, most classic rock FM stations play this: Stairway, Back in Black, Don't Stop Believing, repeat.
However, there is one really good station from my actual town (Farragut, TN) that is really good.

I bought a new car with XM Sattelite Radio nearly two years ago and have hardly listened to any FM radio since then. There is absolutely no variety at all on the FM dial, especially on Classic Rock stations. I don't know how anyone could take listening to the same 40 or 50 songs, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year...

In Dallas/Fort Worth, we're pretty lucky to have KNON/89.3FM, which is truly a "radio by and for the people". Very few commercials--most of the costs are paid by pledge drives every 12 weeks...and NO GOVERNMENT MATCHING FUNDS!!

They have blocks of programming (usually two hours each block); from 4-6PM on weekdays, there's Texas Redneck Renegade Radio that plays Americana/Red Dirt/Alt-Country type of music.
From 6-8 you get Texas Blues Radio, and each dj plays their own kind of blues--from pre-war acoustic to West Coast Jump to Chicago to Piedmont to Texas Blues (of course).

There's other programming as well--Latino Hip-Hop, Native Grooves (Native American tom-tom-chanting music--no kidding), Lone Star Dead (Grateful Dead), some jazz shows, Twisted Kicks (extreme death metal), Rockabilly Revue (with Cowhide Cole!). There's even a community outreach/Dallas news show in the morning (somewhat left-wing radical, but entertaining nonetheless to this apolitical guitar picker).

The DJs are unprofessional, unpaid and awesome...they are there for the love of the program, not just a paycheck...it's the way radio should be!

When I forget to rotate the CD's or ipod tunes in the car I listen to the local community radio station. It plays a bunch of stuff I have never heard, some good, some bad, but different than the regular radio stations where every DJ sounds exactly the same! There are different genres of music at different hours of the day. The DJs on community radio are not professional by any means but thats part of the charm!

They won't play it. I've tried.
