+2 for the last two posts.

CL has a lot of good deals on Squiers with amps. Usually from people who lost interest in guitar.

Also, the Strat pack is one of the best deals around (one stop shopping).

Another option is get a more pricey guitar (full size) with all the x-mas funds, and take the child on his first shopping adventure for a economy amp after x-mas.

i'd go a full size, dont make the same mistake my parents did, about 6 months later i grew out of it.

The Strat Pack is a really nice way to start. Like many of us here, I had to start on a fairly crappy swap meet special.
