Today while I was listening to the Deep Tracks station on Sirius they played a version of Messin' With.... that I've never heard and it was simply Rory at his peak.He was doing wild Albert King/Buddy Guy/Jimi Hendrix bends all over the place and was doing very fast blues riffs hitting the perfect pinch harmonic with each note-I gotta find out where that version came from.I've been a huge Rory fan since the early 70s and sat in the second row when he played here circa '74 if there ever was a guitarist that never gained the recognition that he should have it was Rory Gallagher.

If it was a live version listen to "Live In Europe" and see if it's that one.

To help narrow down your search Messin' With The Kid is not on...
Blueprint
Calling Card
In Concert (BBC Sessions)
Irish Tour
Tattoo

He may have gotten popular in other parts of the world, but it is a shame that he wasn't well known in the U.S. I didn't even know who he was until I accidentally came across his music on the internet a few years ago. The man was one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived (to me anyways) and 98% of the United States don't even know who he is. That's just sad. I have never heard him being played on the radio here in the states.

Someone said in another thread that they wish they could find "new" classic rock. Well, there's alot out there that is never played on the radio, but it's better than alot of what is. It seems like someone could get a radio station going by playing classic rock that people know mixed with classic rock that people don't know.

That's unfortunately typical of people who's taste in music is often dictated by the popularity of the genre it identifies with. The big record corporations basically took advantage of the artists and packaged them into a tidy item of the times. narrowed down the choices of music and for profit, limited the number of artists and made them famous.

I've heard musicians with no name at all who could out play the biggest heroes of the past and present. But they will always remain unknown because people don't see or hear others around them because they have been programed to follow the herd off the cliff. What goes for music goes for politics.
It's sad, but it's true.

Sheesh, go to a music shop and you'll find some amazing talent just waiting to be heard.

I dont think it was ever on an album of his, but I could be wrong. According to what I have found it was recorded live at the Aragon Ball room in Chicago, january 16, 1976

I have live versions of Messin with the Kid on two albums.

Live in Europe and the Beat Club Sessions. Live in Europe is the better version, but the Beat Club is the better overall album.

Thanks for the info, I will have to get one of those albums, I am just now discovering Rory Gallagher after hearing Cradle Rock from Bonamassa album "New Day Yesterday". This was the first time I ever heard/saw him play:

Well...I must admit that up until I saw this post I had heard the name Rory Gallagher, but that was all I knew of him. Now thanks to the Fender forums I have discovered yet another great guitarist.

Always enjoyed Rory Gallagher. Oddly, the main riff from 'Laundromat' is something my fingers just automatically play whenever I am noodling or warming up. Love the live in Europe version.

Glad to see him remembered.

Don't get me wrong, this is not a knock on "Irish Tour" because I do love the album.
But if you are just turning on to Rory, I suggest getting the BBC Sessions. Double CD, one done in concert format, the other all live cuts from his TV studio appearances. The sound quality is much better than Irish Tour. His playing really stands out.
