or at the least, come back down to earth with the rest of us. The roughing rules are way out of hand. This post is based on the eagles/colts game, 11/7.

I understand they're trying to get control over concussions and other serious injuries. Football is simply and inherently a very dangerous sport, period. Honestly, I feel for the guys when I see them sprawled out on the ground. I used to play high school football, and a fellow teammate suffered a broken neck from a serious hit during one game. Its pretty scary when you're on the field. But then again, all players should be aware that these risks exist.

2 instances of this occurred in that game, the first being pretty serious. A few guys were in the vicinity, I believe Mikell and Patterson were 2 of them. The affected Colt, i forget who, was dealt a nasty blow to the head. Naturally the new roughing penalty comes out on the eagles. Most people, and myself, ask why. This is what happens in this sport. Most of the time its an accident. Its unfair for the penalty and fine to be dealt out for this, not that i'm worried about whether these guys can pay the fine...thats another topic. Again, human lives are a serious matter, and I wish him the best, but I highly disagree with this action taken by the officials, and NFL.

You can penalize till your blue in the face, that's not going to stop injuries. Its not like these guys are trying to paralyze each other intentionally, and need to be punished so as to not have it happen again. At this rate, we might as well just abolish tackling, and play 2-hand touch...no wait, still dangerous. that would encourage shoving. flag football, there you go.

And then how about when Cole brushed Peyton in the back of the helmet? and I emphasize "brushed". another 15 yards. that's BS. Where do we draw the line then? this is way out of hand now.
if you want to prevent injury, find better safety gear.

im surprised the eagles managed to win after being shafted.

couldn't agee more. if you don't want to get hurt, don't play football. the pros get paid big bucks to play a violent sport. improve the equipment. leave the game alone.

PRO Football games are rigged. It's a big money makin' racket cannot afford good teams with good players to keep winning every year. The people would lose interest and the beer sponsorship would dry up and the people would act normal, intelligent and rational again.

I worry much more about the young kids playing Jr and high school who watch these monsters beat the hell out of each other and think it is cool to try the same crap on the field. The size difference between the kids at that age adds to the risk for the small guys. There are a lot of other great sports.

Hallelujah!!!

Honestly i'm tired of this crap. I follow a few NFL players on Twitter and they have had it as well. Ryan Clark (#25) FS of the Steelers had this to say:

"Special thanks to all the media. The Little League World Series is now more physical than professional football. You've been heard!"

That hit on Collie was perfectly legal and he was NOT defenseless. Apparently now you have to flag your opponent down and tell him:

"i'm going to tackle you now, make sure you turn towards me and look at me as i do it!"

Collie was a runner at the moment of tackle and the helmet was incidental. The defender led with his shoulder.

Roy Williams hit last night was a good one HOWEVER Roy demands that NFL NOT fine because it was "a football player making a football play!". Good on Roy.

Problem is Goodell and his bitches are already on the fine path i read this morning. GOOD NEWS: NFLPA is ready to take action against the league for these penalties, fines, and suspensions.

Refs have no clue what to do at this point. If a player doesnt fault the other player who cares?

Furthermore the James Harrison hit on Brees with the facemask was the dumbest play i've ever seen fined. It was nothing! Brees didn't complain, heck he just got up and kept playing without a beat.

I've gotten to where I barely watch NFL games anymore. The 85% of the league is roided up and now all the new limitations on the hitting have left me disinterested.

Reminds me of line in "Why Baby Why"

Well, I don't know, but I've heard it said,
That every little dog's gonna have it's day.
You better pay attention don't you dare forget,
I'm just a itty bitty puppy yet.

I can just see them itty bitty puppies growin' up and killin'
them big dowgs.

Thats the way you are taught in Jr. Varsity and Varsity ball and also the reason some don't make the cut to be on the teams.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I agree that something needs to be done with these helmet to helmet hits. Obviously there are those that aren't really on purpose. But the one's that are blatant are very deliberate. There are players who are using this as part of their technique to try to knock someone out cold who is defenseless. They're starting to spear to the back and the side of the helmet for a reason. So the offensive player can't see what's about to happen.

The hit on Roy Williams last weekend was BS. He's coming down from a missed pass, he's already on his way down to the turf, and a guy spears him in the back of the head deliberately, and it hurt him. It was 100% unnecessary. He deserved his fine. People are gonna $@!&* about this until some ends up paralyzed.

I never watch football anymore...used to love it, but got tired of the politics. Once the players couldn't spike the ball after a touchdown, the league has piled on more and more rules, most of which won't do anything to change the outcome of the game or whether or not the players are "safe". They just want to make sure they give the cameraman time to get a quick shot of the Bud Light advertisements...lol

+1. I think that sadly enough this seems to be the path taken by most professional sports these days.

Personally I agree that head injuries are no joke and there should be rules to avoid it, especially helmet to helmet tackles.

I read a study somewhere at uni a couple of weeks ago that the combination of injuries, lifestyle and training linebackers go through right now can knock as much as 20 years off their life expectancy. Thats a massive figure and despite how many millions of dollars they get paid a year I think a step back needs to be taken from winning at all costs to playing a cleaner game.

Plus the NFL's (heck NHL and MLB) steroid and substance abuse policies are totally pathetic.
