i just don't think Mayer deserves it though. I mean he knows his way around a strat, don't get me wrong, but KWS has been around longer and Mayer didn't really show his expertise until recently with his last 2 albums. But what do i know, i am only a meager fan :D :D

I'm in total agreement with you man. KWS is a better choice based on skill and his tenure. I just meant it would be a more "popular" choice to have mayer do it, as in more teenieboppers and fanboys would line up in droves to see that. I hope KWS does it big though, cant wait to see that!

me neither! I already have it set to record

KWS, Mayer etc weren't even a gleam in their fathers eye when Hendrix was around. They can do what they want, it is only a guitar, but it's just a shame to have another unoriginal Strat with a hat play such a sonic pioneers guitar. It should be Buddy Guy without a doubt. he more than paid his dues which is way more than I could say about KWS, Mayer and the rest. Maybe Jeff Beck should have a whack at it too. It should be someone personally connected with Hendrix not some unoriginal top 40 hack.

I agree...it should be one of Hendrix's peers.
Guy, Clapton, Beck, etc...

Yeah, it's only a guitar but if they only let it out on special occasions then it should be someone special playing it who can take the mojo and run with it.

My two euros...

What does a guy have to do to "pay his dues"? Kenny has a stellar 20 year career on his resume... that's fives time longer than Hendrix.

I am old enough too, but I don't remember Stevie getting dogged very much ... certainly not from me or any of my friends ... he sold enough albums and did enough concerts for me to suspect that any dogging wasn't from fans, from some critics perhaps?

KWS was born in what 1977? Which makes him what 33? I don't think he was stellar at 13. He was a kid who could mimic SRV at 13. I know 13 year olds who can ape SRV, Van Halen and Malmsteen and even Eric Johnson. Don't make them stellar. It makes them Parrots. Bonamassa opened for BB King at that age and is a much more rounded player than KWS and a lot more original too. Innovation is part of paying your dues and contributing original material and style none of which Kenny Wayne "The Parrot" Sheppard or Mayer have. They ride the coat tails of innovators. I can Parrot a lot on musicians but won't. I'm pretty well respected locally and I'm proud of it. Didn't get any respect by parroting other folks but by creating my own style. There are too many "Strats With Hats" all over the country and it all bores me to death. Just my opinion YMMV.

Kenny has a career that always played it safe and innovated or originally created nothing.

SRV wasn't dogged nearly as much as Trower or Hansen.

I'm a KWS fan, I think it's cool that he gets the chance to play it. I think any guitarist would be honored to have a chance to play that guitar. I know I'd be stoked to have the chance!

I can see where younger fans would love to see their guitar heroes plat Hendrix's Strat. Having lived the time that Hendrix was around and hearing "Purple Haze" and "Foxy Lady" when it was first aired on the radio, it bothers me. I still find KWS a Parrot and a hack. Just me though. Not saying he doesn't work hard or anything, He's just not an original talent in my view. He's just yet another SRV clone in my eyes. In some of the youtube stuff, he even has a singer that sounds pretty close to SRV.

Thats gotta be sarcasm.

They shouldn't touch Hendrix's strat, at all, ever, not anyone.

It's probably been strung righthanded before now. You'd need to swap the nut round too.

Why can't they just leave well alone. KWS is damned if he does this. The only people that are going to appreciate it are KWS fans, then I think he'll come under harsh critisism when he doesn't sound like Hendrix.

Just leave the thing alone.

A few months ago Premier Guitar did a special on the Experience Hendrix Tour, here are some of the highlights of the KWS part of the article...

"Of all the players who took the stage in Milwaulee, Kenny Wayne Shepherd was the most like a man possessed of Hendrix's spirit."

"... he gave the most provocative and awe-inspiring performance of the night."

"... played with a passionate, fearless stage presence that dripped with Hendrixian charisma."

"The first five seconds of the song (Voodoo Child) had barely reverbated... before the crowd was on it's feet..."

"The extended guitar solo contained some of the finest guitar playing of the night..."

"The way Shepherd owned the stage was an art form in itself."

Now considering that the other acts on the tour include Ernie Isley, Hubert Sumlin, Eric Johnson, Johnny Lang and Joe Satriani, for KWS to get such a outstanding review speaks volumes.

Well if the experience janey hendericks foundation told me the sky is blue, I'd look up to check. Seriously janey hendericks is a money grabbing cow and has about as much of her distant relatives spirit as a empty beer can.
Their opinion doesn't mean much to me at all. The experience janey hendericks tour is just a money making gimmick based on a long dead artist.

As far as KWS being a Hendrix inspired player, yeah, yawn, heard it all a million times before about a million other players. It's branded around so much, it's a meaningless statement. That coming from the business responsible for Fender not being able to produce a hendrix strat, and the force behind the gibson strat. It means nothing at all.

Infact seeing how the experience janey hendericks corporation operate. I'd have to ask, how much did the artists have to pay to play? How much more did shepard have to pay to get em to make that statement.

Thats about sums up the regard I have for that statement from that company.
If Ernie Isley or Satch had said it, or anyone else who has some actual knowledge of the man or the instrument, I'd believe it. janey and al hendericks had no knowledge of who Jimi Hendrix was, or what he was like. Read most biographies and Jimi's disdain for his 'dad' is quite apparent. Let alone some half sister who met him once as a small child.

However the simple fact is that whether Shepard has the ability to do the thing justice or not, is not in question here. The simple fact is that it's going to go down wrong with all but the hardcore KWS fans and the completely indifferent. He won't be doing himself any favours.

What are you talking about Niki? The article was written by Chris Kies and Jordan Wagner, both work for Premier Guitar. Janey Hendricks had nothing to do with the article.

What's the point? You guys are obviously going to give it negative reviews no matter how good it is.
