Depends on your definition of "affordable". Late 70's Strats go for around $2500.

Just buy a Firebird X, it whoops all the vintage guitars.

This thread is kind of pointless without defining "affordable". And defining "vintage". I see ads on craigslist listing guitars from the 90's as "vintage"

I define "affordable" as less than $1000. And I define "vintage" as pre-1970. So I guess my only choice for vintage guitars are crappy 60's Harmony and Kay gutars with a warped neck and falling apart

Valco/Supro, Dano, some Kay's, National, check this out http://cgi.ebay.com/ca1965-Vintage-Nati ... 20b4d3af70

Look beyond Fender and Gibson, there's lot of seriously cool great sounding, well made stuff out there.

Beauty's in the eye of the beholder. You'd hate my Supro. Tone wise it smokes an overpriced vintage Mustang a Duo Sonic or Musicmaster which were all student model mediocre sounding guitars. All of which I owned as a kid at one point or another. Never kept them very long. Why do you think Kurt Cobain liked the Mustang?

Old Harmonys,Kays,Voxes,Hagstroms,Ekos,Goyas etc. can still be had for anywhere from $250 up to $2,500 although Voxes and Hagstoms are starting to rise in value.I have a gut feeling that older Voxes in particular will really start to climb in price and popularity, with the start up of Vox guitars lately interest in the older ones will no doubt grow and the same goes for Hagstrom but not in as big a way.Older Vox and Hagstrom guitars were extremely well made and had really thin necks and super low action and sounded great too.I have 3 older Voxes and 2 older Hagstroms and I can attest for the quality that went into these guitars-some were decades ahead of other manufacturers.
