I knew someone would ask that

Back when I was in the Air Force in 74, I bought that 59-61 LPC 2 pickup fretless wonder for $200 in a little shop in Kokomo Indiana, ( I actually still have the 2 Janis Joplin sheet music books I also bought that day).
As we all did I swapped the tail piece, bridge, Kluson tuners, pick up rings, I made it look like Beck's Les paul, the one on the back of the LP/CD "Wired" for what I believed at the time was needed, the guitar was never in tune for long.
In 1993 I needed to pay NYSE fee's and rent, I had switched to playing strats and the weight of the Les Paul as well as it's narrow tone parameters meant that it was time to sell.(prematurely obviously).
I sold it as it was to someone in New Heaven CT and kept the original parts which I have today..

Not to be too picky, but a 1961 Les Paul was actually an SG even though it carried the "Les Paul" name (that is true for 1962 as well). In 1963, the name was formally changed to "SG". Les Pauls -- as we think of them -- were actually not made between 1961-67. Just FYI ...

Nope, sorry but the Les Paul Custom was made up until 61 then reintroduced around 68-69.

This was a two pickup Les Paul Custom, gold hardware, bridge was/is a tune-o-matic with the nylon/plastic saddles, very short lived version, the guitar's finish was extremely checked when I bought it, the binding had yellowed, it was a fretless wonder, the klusons were/are waffle backed triangular knobbed, gold plated, the tailpiece was worn right down to the bare metal from use.
This guitar was not abused, it had lived a life as a well played instrument prior to my buying it.
I have extensively researched the details, have spoken to vintage experts in NYC and have confirmed thru Gibson books as to when it was made.
Back in 1973 to 75, Les Paul's, Flying V's, even the occasional Explorer were easy to find in the midwest and all could be had for a song and a dance.
sought after at the time were the acoustic's Dove and Hummingbird but for some reason the Les-paul's were temporarily out of fashion.

A two pickup Les Paul Custom from 59 to 61 was a special order, the reason it went out of production for a few years was because (1) the 3 pickup set up made it difficult for musicians who were used to playing a 2 pickup set up.
That middle pickup was in the way of picking and strumming and the black color was not popular.

I had this guitar from 1974 to 1993, it often got " whoah..." responses when seen just because it was one of the unusual one's.
I'm not going to debate what it was, an SG most certainly not, though I'm aware that Gibson confused the issue on two very different models sporting the same moniker.
I just wanted advice on the pitfalls of selling on E-Bay and how to avoid problems.

I am not debating anything ... I always thought there were no "traditional" Les Pauls made between 1961-67. Evidently that statement is only "mostly" true. You mentioned your 61 LP Custom was a special order ... Were all the traditional Les Paul Customs in 1961 available only by special order? Being a '61, I am guessing it must be quite rare (compared to the SG-body-style LPs and the 1960 run, I am guessing). But wasn't there also a Les Paul Custom in the SG-body-style? Or did that model come out in 1962? If so, then this must be especially confusing if they were calling two totally different guitars a "Les Paul Custom". Either way, can you post a pic of it? We'd love to see it ...

Sorry, jumped the gun on that one.

You are correct , by what I understand the Les Paul Custom was discontinued in 61 whereas the Les Paul SG (or Sculptured ) began in 1960.
What seems to further confuse the issue is that a Les Paul guitar is actually part of an entire line of various models all under the name Les Paul, the key is that the actual name was Sculptured Les Paul Standard and Custom.
The 335 sold very well, even taking sales away from the Les Paul Custom, then the Junior's were made and well received. Players were complaining of the 8.5 to 9 pound weight of the Les Paul's, the sharp body edges and the single cutaway.
Gibson Came up with what we today refer to as, the SG, but it was to replace the Les Paul's with a single cutaway which were now discontinued.
Thus the discontinued models gave up their name to the new models called then Les Paul Custom's and Standard's but we refer to as SG's which is an acronym for solid guitar.

As far as unique , No, I had seen a few 2 pup Les Paul Customs in the midwest in 74 to 76.
standard for the Les paul Custom was 3 pick ups but you could order only two pickups if you so wanted.

Available pics I don't have or more to the point there are photos of me playing that guitar but they are somewhere at my mom's attic.
Since I no longer have this guitar, I'm unable to offer current pics.
Only of the parts.
