1998 - Nancy Sinatra makes the announcement at a press conference in the capital that the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., have worked out an agreement to be the repository of the late Frank Sinatra's music and movie archives.

1958 - Carlos Cavazo, rocker (Quiet Riot-We're Not Gonna Take It)

1908 - Vocalist/saxophonist Louis Jordan is born in Brinkley, Ark. He dies of a heart attack on Feb. 4, 1975. His song ``I'm Gonna Leave You at the Outskirts of Town'' was No. 3 during the debut week of Billboard's first R&B chart, the Harlem Hit Parade, on Oct. 24, 1942. He followed with 18 No. 1 R&B hits, including four that topped the chart for more than 10 week

1971 - Jim Morrison is buried in Paris' Pere Lachaise Cemetery, his family having disowned him. The often-vandalized grave becomes a shrine for fans.

1946 - Bon (Ronald Belford) Scott, lead singer of AC/DC, is born in Kirriemuir, Scotland. He dies Feb. 19, 1980 of alcohol abuse and is replaced by Brian Johnson.

1947 - Balladeer Arlo Guthrie is born in Coney Island, N.Y., the son of folk singer Woody Guthrie. His most famous song is the 18-minute Thanksgiving tale ``Alice's Restaurant.''

2005 - Veteran rock group INXS emerges from the land down under with a new record deal and a very public search for a new singer. The band launches their reality show, "Rock Star: INXS," to replace late frontman Michael Hutchence, who committed suicide in 1997.

2005 - Jeannette Sliwinski, 23, a self-proclaimed suicidal woman, rams her vehicle into another car, killing the three musicians inside. Silkworm drummer Michael Dahlquist , 39, John Glick, 35, and Douglas Meis, 29, were on their lunch break when Sliwinski hits their stopped car at a red light.

2005 - Pioneering African-American country artist Big Al Downing dies at a hospital near his home in Leicester, Mass. Downing, 65, is felled by complications from Leukemia, with which he had been recently diagnosed.

2003 - Skip Battin, former bassist for the Byrds and other notable country-rock bands of the '70s and '80s, dies near Palm Springs, Calif., of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He is 69. Battin appeared on the Byrds' 1970-71 albums "Untitled," "Byrdmaniax" and "Farther Along."

1999 - Rock drummer Tommy Lee is congratulated by a judge for abstaining from drugs and alcohol while on probation for spousal abuse. As wife Pamela Anderson Lee looks on, the former Motley Crue drummer is told by the Malibu judge that he is "entitled to more confidence," and that Lee will now be allowed to perform in places where alcohol is served.

1990 - Singer and bandleader Bobby Day dies of cancer at the age of 60. His recordings included ``Rockin' Robin'' and ``Little Bitty Pretty One.''

1967 - Jazz saxophonist John Coltrane dies of liver disease at the age of 40. He is posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992.

2000 - British vocalist Paul Young, who sand with Mike And The Mechanics and Sad Caf, dies of a heart attack in Chesire, U.K. He is 53.


1996 - Musician and manager Chas (Bryan) Chandler dies at the age of 57.

1974 - The Moody Blues open the first quadraphonic studio in London.

1968 - The full-length animated film "Yellow Submarine," with songs by the Beatles, premieres in London.

1959 - Jazz singer Billie Holiday dies. She posthumously receives a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987 and three of her recordings receive Grammy Hall of Fame Awards: "Strange Fruit" (1939), "God Bless the Child" (1941) and "Lover Man (Oh, Where Can You Be?)" (1945). The 1972 film "Lady Sings the Blues" is based on her life.

2003 - Barry White, the R&B crooner renowned for his deep, erotic baritone, dies at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he had been undergoing dialysis after suffering a stroke in May. He is 58.

1998 - The late singer/songwriter Harry Chapin - famed for donating half his concert proceeds to causes such as hunger relief - continues his humanitarian efforts through the Harry Chapin Tribute Concert. The concert features members of Chapin's original band. Attendants are asked to bring donations of nonperishable foods.

1995 - The oldest known musical instrument in the world is found in the Indrijca River Valley in Slovenia. The 45,000 year-old relic, a crude wind instrument, is a bear bone with four artificial holes along its length.

1972 - Boston Mayor Kevin White helps get Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones out of jail in Warwick, R.I., so they can make their performance at the Boston Garden. The two were arrested for getting into a scuffle with a Providence, R.I., photographer.

2002 - Blues singer/guitarist "Little" Jimmy King dies at his Memphis home of undetermined causes. He is 36.

1999 - The Artist Formerly Known As Prince steals the show at the second annual Yahoo! Internet Life Awards, held at Studio 54 in New York. He wins best Internet-only single ("War") and leads an impromptu musical reunion that features James Brown saxophonist Maceo Parker and four members of Sly & the Family Stone.

1991 - Drummer Steve Adler files suit in Los Angeles against his former band, Guns N' Roses. The 26-year-old claims band members pressured him to use heroin and then dropped him after he entered a rehabilitation program.

1954 - Elvis Presley's first single, "That's All Right Mama," is released by Sun Records.

1946 - Alan Gorrie of Average White Band is born in Perth, Scotland. The group's only No. 1 song is the million-selling single "Pick Up the Pieces." The song is written in memory of the band's drummer, Robbie McIntosh, who died of a heroin overdose.

1998 - Veteran musician, music executive, and manager Jim Tyrrell dies of heart failure in New York. He is 67. Tyrrell had a 10-year career at then-CBS Records, starting in 1968. Tyrrell is the first black executive to serve as senior VP at CBS and is a pioneer in handling sales for both black and white artists at a major label.

1964 - Chris Cornell, singer and guitarist for Seattle megagroup, Soundgarden is born in Seattle, Wash.

1947 - Carlos Santana is born in Autlan de Navarro, Mexico. He forms the group Santana in San Francisco in 1966. The group's biggest hits are the top 10 songs "Evil Ways" and "Black Magic Woman" and the No. 1 "Smooth" with matchbox twenty's Rob Thomas.

1940 - The first Billboard music popularity chart is introduced.

1990 - Former Pink Floyd member Roger Waters stages a production of his rock opera, "The Wall," in Berlin. Among the performers taking part in the benefit are Sinead O'Connor, Cyndi Lauper, Bryan Adams and Phil Collins.
