I think Fender does a wonderful job with their calendars, its a highly anticipated present opening on Dec. 25. Also the effort involved to do something like that is fairly immense. Keep up the great calendars Fender!

1947 - Carlos Santana is born in Autlan de Navarro, Mexico. He forms the group Santana in San Francisco in 1966. The group's biggest hits are the top 10 songs "Evil Ways" and "Black Magic Woman" and the No. 1 "Smooth" with matchbox twenty's Rob Thomas.

1964 - Chris Cornell, singer and guitarist for Seattle megagroup, Soundgarden is born in Seattle, Wash.

1998 - Veteran musician, music executive, and manager Jim Tyrrell dies of heart failure in New York. He is 67. Tyrrell had a 10-year career at then-CBS Records, starting in 1968. Tyrrell is the first black executive to serve as senior VP at CBS and is a pioneer in handling sales for both black and white artists at a major label.

60 years ago Singer David Essex is born. (1947)

45 years ago The American Communications satellite, Telstar, makes its first trans-Atlantic transmission which inspires British record producer Joe Meek to pen "Telstar." The instrumental tune is recorded later in the week by the Toronados. The song becomes a big hit. (1962)

38 years ago James Brown walks out of L.A. Mayor Sam Yorty's office when the mayor fails to show up at 10 a.m. as promised. Yorty was going to present Brown with a proclamation declaring James Brown Day. (1969)

37 years ago Pressure from the community and the local government persuades a New Haven, Connecticut district court to rule against the Powder Ridge Rock Festival. It's decided that the festival would create a public nuisance and can't be held even though over 18,000 tickets have all ready been sold. Acts like Chuck Berry, Led Zeppelin and Janis Joplin are notified of a ban on their appearance at the site. The crowds come anyway. (1970)

30 years ago Led Zeppelin's drummer, John Bonham, manager Peter Grant and two secuirty guards are arrested backstage at the Oakland Coliseum. They were charged with battery after allegedly beating up three employees of Bill Graham, the groups Oakland concert promoter. After pleading guilty to misdemeanors, the accused settle out of court for two million dollars. (1977)

30 years ago Foreigner's "Cold As Ice" is released. (1977)

27 years ago Former Grateful Dead keyboardist, Keith Godchaux dies of injuries sustained in a car accident in Marin County, California. (1980)

26 years ago Billy Squier earns his first gold album. He has a big hit with his second solo record, "Don't Say No." (1981)

17 years ago Production begins on the film, "Falling From Grace", which marks John Mellencamp's acting and directing debut. (1990)

15 years ago Bruce Springsteen opens his first U.S. tour since 1988 at The Brendan Byrne arena in the Meadowlands complex in New Jersey. The Boss plays
13 sold out shows in the 21,000 seat arena, with some of the shows going until 1AM. (1992)

1998 - It is announced that Aerosmith will postpone the first 13 dates of its 50-date U.S. tour following a freak gas station fire that leaves drummer Joey Krammer with second-degree burns. This marks the second setback to the Aerosmith tour; 18 earlier dates had to be postponed following Steven Tyler's knee injury and surgery the preceding April.

1998 - The "Gift To The Nation" concert, a combination of two separate events in Johannesburg, and Durban, South Africa, begins. The concerts are to celebrate President Nelson Mandela's 80th birthday. 2001 - Blues singer/songwriter Bonnie Raitt and former Doors drummer John Densmore are among activists arrested after a public protest in Itasca, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago. Raitt and Densmore join with other members of the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) to demonstrate against the forest products company Boise Cascade Corporation, which RAN claims destroys ancient rainforests and tries to limit the free speech rights of its opponents.

2000 - Pat DiNizio, frontman of the Smithereens, officially announces that he is running for a U.S. Senate sear for New Jersey on the Reform Party ticket.

1999 - At Woodstock 99, all hell breaks loose. Fires fueled by paper plates, pizza boxes and garbage strewn around everywhere break out during a set by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The group's encore is delayed because a remote sound tower begins to burn. A fire truck is brought in to put out the blaze.

1998 - Jazz guitarist Tal Farlow dies of esophageal cancer in New York. He is 77. Farlow worked with such musicians as Charles Mingus, Red Norvo, and Eddie Costa in a career spanning four decades.

1997 - On the Grand Old Opry Martina McBride debuts her new single "Broken Wing" with a special guest. Her father, Daryl Schiff (considered a part-time singer) joins her on the stage.

1997 - John Berry fills a tall order when he provides music following the weddings of 48 couples as a radio station promotion for WYGY-FM in Cincinnati. Following the ceremony, Berry serenades the couples with his romance-oriented hits, "Your Love Amazes Me" and "I Will If You Will."

1995 - Singer Nina Simone fires a gun at a pair of noisy teenagers playing next door to her home in southern France. She is put on 18 months probation and ordered to seek psychological counseling.

1992 - Bryan Adams helps two motorists whose car struck his on a highway in St. Gellen, Switzerland. Adams was traveling from Zurich to Vienna as part of a concert tour when the other car skidded out of control, grazed his car and hit an embankment.

1969 - Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young give their first live performance at the Fillmore East in New York.

1966 - Eric Clapton plays lead guitar for George Harrison's ``While My Guitar Gently Weeps'' on the album ``The Beatles'' (also known as ``The White Album'').

1965 - Bob Dylan performs his first non-acoustic set at the Newport Folk Festival to a hostile crowd.

1998 - Sha Na Na member "Chico" Ryan dies at a nursing home in Beverly, Mass. He is 50. The singer/bassist, real name David-Allen Ryan, joined the already established Sha Na Na in 1973 and remained with the '50s revival group for nearly 25 years.

1996 - Composer Evelyn Levine dies at the age of 84.

1992 - Motown recording artist Mary Wells dies in Los Angeles after a long bout with cancer. The singer's biggest pop hit was the 1964 song ``My Guy,'' which topped Billboard's Hot 100 for two weeks.

1992 - Kiss guitarist Paul Stanley marries actress-model Pamela Bowen in Los Angeles.

1990 - Grateful Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland dies of a drug overdose in Lafayette, Calif., at age 38. Mydland had replaced keyboardist Keith Godchaux - who died in 1979 - who in turn had replaced Ron ``Pigpen'' McKernan - who died in 1973.

2003 - Iron Butterfly guitarist Erik Braunn dies in L.A. of apparent cardiac arrest. He is 52. Braunn had been suffering from a "debilitating physical ailment," according to a post on his official Web site.

2003 - More than 450,000 fans turned out in Toronto for the Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto benefit at Downsview Park, aimed at boosting the city's sagging economy in the wake of the SARS virus. "I think it's the biggest crowd we've ever played to, so it is a fantastic buzz," Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger said.

2003 - French singer Bertrand Cantat, frontman of rock band Noir Desir, is named as a suspect following an injury to his partner, actress Marie Trintignant. Cantat, 36, is alleged to have assaulted Trintignant, 41, during an argument while he is under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs. During the dispute, Trintignant reportedly fell to the ground and hit her head, resulting in a brain hemorrhage that required two hours of surgery.

2003 - Iron Maiden drummer Michael "Nicko" McBrain is arrested and charged with assault after hitting a parking attendant with his car, according to reports. The incident occurs backstage at the Tommy Hilfiger at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, N.Y., where the band is performing that night.

2003 - The Backstreet Boys' Kevin Richardson reprises his role as Billy Flynn in the stage production of "Chicago" when he joins the show's U.S. touring company for its Aug. 5-24 stay at San Francisco's Golden Gate Theatre. 2003 - Pioneering producer and indie-label operator Sam Phillips dies in Memphis of respiratory failure. He is 80. In the early '50s, Phillips' Memphis Recording Service (later known as Sun Studio) cut and leased major blues and R&B recordings by Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Ike Turner and others.

2001 - Peter Buck, guitarist for R.E.M., pleads not guilty to a series of charges relating to an alleged "air rage" incident during a transatlantic flight in April. Buck, appearing at Isleworth Crown Court, is accused of assaulting two British Airways staffers, being drunk on board an aircraft, causing criminal damage and interfering with a control panel on an external door.

1997 - The Battlefield Benefit gets under way at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. The concert - which features Kentucky HeadHunters, Highway 101, Rhett Akins, Ronna Reeves and Randall Franks - raises money for the preservation of sites remaining from the 1864 Battle of Nashville, which sealed the fate of the Confederacy.

1997 - '80s group Boys Don't Cry sues Paula Cole, Warner Bros. Records and Imago Records over Cole's pop song "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone." The $7 million suit claims that Cole's song sounds too much like the 1986 Boys Don't Cry hit, "I Wanna Be A Cowboy."

1996 - Tim Collins, manager of Aerosmith since 1984, is fired after a brief meeting with the band in Boston. The band claims that they are tired of being urged to represent Collins' many social causes.

1966 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: ``Wild Thing,'' The Troggs. Because of a legal dispute, the song is simultaneously released on two different labels, something unique for a No. 1 single.

1958 - Singer Kate Bush is born in Bexley, Kent, England. Her biggest pop hit is the top 40 song ``Running Up That Hill'' in 1985.

1956 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: ``My Prayer,'' The Platters. The five are the first black artists to have a No. 1 single on the pop charts.

1945 - Jazz sax player David Sanborn is born. He wins his first Grammy in 1982 as best R&B instrumental performance. He later wins Grammys in the jazz fusion and pop instrumental categories.

1941 - Singer/songwriter Paul Anka is born in Ottawa, Ontario. He has four No. 1 hits, including ``Lonely Boy'' from the film ``Girl's Town.'' He writes ``My Way'' for Frank Sinatra, ``She's a Lady'' for Tom Jones and the theme for NBC-TV's ``Tonight Show.''
