2006 - Blues singer and guitarist Jessie Mae Hemphill, who made her recording debut in 1981 with "She-Wolf," dies in Memphis, Tenn. at the age of 71.

1999 - In an unfortunate case of history repeating, East Village art-rockers Jon Spencer Blues finds that its equipment has been stolen. The theft, which occurs in Vancouver, echoes that of N.Y. avant-garde rockers Sonic Youth, who had a van full of their vintage and customized gear stolen from outside their hotel room in Orange County, Calif. over the July 4 weekend.

1998 - Raimundo Amador, Spain's premier exponent of gypsy flamenco-blues, records a live album alongside his idol, B.B. King, in front of a capacity audience of 20,000 at Madrid's Las Ventas bullring. The Universal Music Hispania album, to be released in September of that year with 15 tracks, is called "Noche De Flamenco Y Blues."

1968 - The Byrds' "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" album is released.

1947 - Drummer Don Henley of the Eagles is born in Gilmer, Texas. The group has five No. 1 hits. Henley's biggest solo hits are the top five "Dirty Laundry" and "The Boys of Summer." He wins Grammys for Best Male Rock Performance in 1985 and 1989.

1980 - Keith Godchaux, former keyboardist of the Grateful Dead, dies in an auto wreck at the age of 32.

1977 - Judas Priest begins its first U.S. tour in Oakland, Calif., as the opening act for Led Zeppelin.

2001 - Blues singer/songwriter Bonnie Raitt and former Doors drummer John Densmore are among activists arrested after a public protest in Itasca, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago. Raitt and Densmore join with other members of the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) to demonstrate against the forest products company Boise Cascade Corporation, which RAN claims destroys ancient rainforests and tries to limit the free speech rights of its opponents.

2000 - Pat DiNizio, frontman of the Smithereens, officially announces that he is running for a U.S. Senate sear for New Jersey on the Reform Party ticket.

1999 - At Woodstock 99, all hell breaks loose. Fires fueled by paper plates, pizza boxes and garbage strewn around everywhere break out during a set by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The group's encore is delayed because a remote sound tower begins to burn. A fire truck is brought in to put out the blaze.

1998 - Jazz guitarist Tal Farlow dies of esophageal cancer in New York. He is 77. Farlow worked with such musicians as Charles Mingus, Red Norvo, and Eddie Costa in a career spanning four decades.

1995 - Singer Nina Simone fires a gun at a pair of noisy teenagers playing next door to her home in southern France. She is put on 18 months probation and ordered to seek psychological counseling.

1969 - Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young give their first live performance at the Fillmore East in New York.

1966 - Eric Clapton plays lead guitar for George Harrison's ``While My Guitar Gently Weeps'' on the album ``The Beatles'' (also known as ``The White Album'').

1965 - Bob Dylan performs his first non-acoustic set at the Newport Folk Festival to a hostile crowd.

2006 - Acclaimed jump-blues and R&B pianist/vocalist/songwriter Floyd Dixon, best-known for the 1954 song "Hey Bartender," dies in Los Angeles at the age of 77.

2004 - One of South Africa's most respected bass players and songwriters, Sipho Gumede, dies in a Durban hospital following his admission for internal bleeding. He is 47.

1998 - Sha Na Na member "Chico" Ryan dies at a nursing home in Beverly, Mass. He is 50. The singer/bassist, real name David-Allen Ryan, joined the already established Sha Na Na in 1973 and remained with the '50s revival group for nearly 25 years.

1990 - Grateful Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland dies of a drug overdose in Lafayette, Calif., at age 38. Mydland had replaced keyboardist Keith Godchaux - who died in 1979 - who in turn had replaced Ron ``Pigpen'' McKernan - who died in 1973.

1969 - Elvis Presley opens his first live engagement in nearly eight years. Las Vegas, Nev.

1968 - John Lennon and Paul McCartney complete ``Hey Jude'' during a writing session at Paul's home. The song hits No. 1 in the U.S. a month later.

1943 - Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger is born in Kent, England. The group, which takes its name from a Muddy Waters song, is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. The group does not receive a Grammy Award until 1986 when it is presented a Lifetime Achievement Grammy.

2001 - Leon Wilkeson, bassist of Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, dies in his sleep in his Jacksonville, Fla., home. He is 49. Wilkeson _ a member of the bluesy rock band since its early recordings _ stayed with the group after a 1977 plane crash killed vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and his sister, backup singer Cassie.

1986 - Queen becomes the first Western act since Louis Armstrong in 1964 to play in Budapest, Hungary.

1984 - The Prince film ``Purple Rain'' premieres.

1976 - John Lennon receives his ``green card'' from U.S. immigration authorities.

1949 - Singer Maureen McGovern is born in Youngstown, Ohio. Her biggest hit is the million-selling No. 1 song ``The Morning After.''

2001 - Presley Scott Harwell, son of Smash Mouth lead singer Steve Harwell and Michelle Laroque, dies from complications due to acute lymphatic leukemia.

1998 - It is announced that after 12 years and six albums, the members of Columbia Records act Toad The Wet Sprocket will go their own ways. Of the split, the band's singer/guitarist Glen Phillips says, "We came together as kids but have grown in different directions as adults."

1973 - A crowd of 600,000 gathers for a rock festival at Watkins Glen Raceway, N.Y., to hear the Grateful Dead, the Band and the Allman Brothers Band.

1957 - Jerry Lee Lewis makes his TV debut on the ``Steve Allen Show.''

1945 - Rick Wright of Pink Floyd is born in London. Billboard ranks the group's 1973 album ``Dark Side of the Moon'' as the longest-charting album of all time. It stays on the magazine's pop album chart for more than 10 years and sells more than 10 million copies.

1944 - Blues guitarist Mike Bloomfield is born in Chicago. He dies on Feb. 15, 1981, in San Francisco of an accidental drug overdose.

1998 - Miramax Films co-chairmen Bob and Harvey Weinstein announce that although money can't buy you love, it can buy them all rights to the Beatles' landmark film "A Hard Day's Night." Miramax announces plans to release the 1964 classic later that year for it's 35th anniversary with new footage, a fully restored negative and digitally remastered, six-track stereo sound.

1966 - Bob Dylan is injured in a motorcycle accident near his Woodstock, N.Y., home; he goes into seclusion.

1965 - The Beatles' second film - ``Help!'' - premieres in London. Queen Elizabeth is in attendance.

1959 - The Isley Brothers record ``Shout.'' The song reaches No. 47. Joey Dee & the Starliters take the song to No. 6 in 1962.

1953 - Vocalist Geddy Lee of Rush is born in Toronto. He is also featured on the No. 16 single ``Take Off'' by Bob & Doug McKenzie, characters from ``SCTV'' played by comedians Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas.

2003 - Iron Butterfly guitarist Erik Braunn dies in L.A. of apparent cardiac arrest. He is 52. Braunn had been suffering from a "debilitating physical ailment," according to a post on his official Web site.

2003 - Pioneering producer and indie-label operator Sam Phillips dies in Memphis of respiratory failure. He is 80. In the early '50s, Phillips' Memphis Recording Service (later known as Sun Studio) cut and leased major blues and R&B recordings by Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Ike Turner and others.

1996 - Tim Collins, manager of Aerosmith since 1984, is fired after a brief meeting with the band in Boston. The band claims that they are tired of being urged to represent Collins' many social causes.

1968 - The Beatles' Apple Boutique in London closes after heavy losses.

1966 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: ``Wild Thing,'' The Troggs. Because of a legal dispute, the song is simultaneously released on two different labels, something unique for a No. 1 single.

1941 - Singer/songwriter Paul Anka is born in Ottawa, Ontario. He has four No. 1 hits, including ``Lonely Boy'' from the film ``Girl's Town.'' He writes ``My Way'' for Frank Sinatra, ``She's a Lady'' for Tom Jones and the theme for NBC-TV's ``Tonight Show.''

1981 - Debbie Harry, lead singer of the 1970's new wave group Blondie, releases a solo album, ``Koo Koo.'' It includes a controversial picture of the singer with long needles penetrating her cheeks.

1980 - John Phillips, leader of the Mamas and Papas, is arrested by the FBI for possession of cocaine. He is sentenced to five years in prison but lectures against drugs for 250 hours as an alternate sentence.

1968 - The Beatles record ``Hey Jude.'' It tops Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart for nine weeks, making it the megagroup's biggest hit.

1964 - Country music singer Jim Reeves dies at age 39 in a plane crash near Nashville, Tenn., along with his manager, Dean Manuel. Reeves' hits include ``Welcome to My World'' and ``He'll Have to Go.''

1958 - Bill Berry of R.E.M. is born.

1945 - Gary Lewis (Gary Levitch) of Gary Lewis & the Playboys is born in New York. The group's only No. 1 song is the million-selling ``This Diamond Ring'' in 1965.

2002 - A van driven by blues guitarist Popa Chubby (Ted Horowitz) overturns, injuring Horowitz and two band members, keyboard player Dave Keyes and drummer Rod Gross.

2001 - Ron Townson, centerpiece singer for the Grammy-winning pop group the 5th dimension, dies at his home in Las Vegas. The 68-year-old singer suffers renal failure as a result of a four-year battle with kidney disease.


1937 - The Band's Garth Hudson is born in London, Ontario.

2006 - Arthur Lee, the singer and guitarist for psychedelic rock pioneers Love, dies) at the Methodist University Hospital in his hometown of Memphis after battling leukemia. He is 61.

2006 - Celebrated opera singer Elisabeth Schwarzkopf dies at her home in Schruns, Austria. She is 90.

2004 - Legendary Southern Rock figure Lacy Van Zant dies at his home in Jacksonville, Fla., due to chronic pulmonary illness. He is 89. The father of the late Ronnie Van Zant (founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd), current Skynyrd frontman Johnny Van Zant and 38 Special's Donnie Van Zant, as well as daughters Darlene and Marlene, Lacy was known as the "Father of Southern Rock."

1974 - Guitarist Jeff Baxter quits Steely Dan and joins the Doobie Brothers.

1969 - Beach Boy Carl Wilson is indicted in Los Angeles after failing to work as a hospital orderly in lieu of military draft.

1963 - Final Beatles' performance at Liverpool's Cavern Club.

1926 - Singer Tony Bennett is born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in Astoria, NY.

2001 - The Foo Fighters treat 300 lucky fans to a rare club show at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, Calif. Winners are chosen from a pool of E-mail entries submitted to the group's official Web site.

1992 - Drummer Jeff Porcaro dies of cardiac arrest at age 38. The co-founder of Toto was spraying insecticide in his yard and developed an allergic reaction that triggered the heart attack.

1976 - NBC-TV airs ``The Beach Boys: It's O.K.,'' the group's 15th anniversary special.

1963 - No. 1 Billboard Pop Hit: ``Fingertips (Pt. 2),'' Little Stevie Wonder. The song is the first live single to go to No. 1. This also marks the first time that a single and the album it came from both topped Billboard's pop charts at the same time. More amazing is the fact that Wonder at the same time also topped the R&B single and album chart.

1957 - The first edition of Dick Clark's ``American Bandstand'' airs on national TV. (ABC).

1942 - Rick Huxley, bass guitarist with the Dave Clark Five, is born.
