The past few days I've been going through my collection of the entire Smiths' discography and quite a few Morrissey and have redscovered why I was first drawn to their music.Morrissey is a gifted lyricist and although his lyrics have always been branded as "dark and sombre" I believe that he wrote most of them with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek. It goes without saying what a great guitarist Johnny Marr is although not technically brilliant as Beck or Clapton his guitar parts are a perfect fit for their songs and no other riffs would be nearly as effective. His tremolo laden rythym guitar part in How Soon Is Now although simple is brilliant and the eerie slide part is just the perfect addition to the spirit of the song. Andy Rourke's bass fillins and Mike Joyce's drumming really provide the perfect rythym section to Morrissey and Marr and the amalgam of the 4 is a match made in heaven.Any more Smiths/Morrissey freaks out there?

Yeah i liked the Smiths along with plenty of other bands in the 80s especially from the Manchester area (as well as Blur from London) lol.

I mean who could argue with The Stone Roses etc etc and the best of the best from a few years earlier Joy Division.

Manchester what a music scene that was.............. reminisces.

It seems that Britain held the monopoly in great "alternative" rock bands in the late 80s and early 90s The Stone Roses and Blur as well as Radiohead were favourites of mine also.
