Who on earth thinks that a cranked JVM drive or highgain channel sounds anywhere near as good as a plexi or bluesbreaker with a rangemaster or fuzzface infront of it?

'Morning Nick: I do! :D

Seriously, you know perfectly well that yours are the "respected ears" I refered to regarding my TSL's clean channel. I defer to you completely on that - and frankly on all things tone related. Never heard a single word from you to make me doubt your opinion on these things.

But honestly: when I run either the crunch or lead channels on that amp I just can't think of a thing to do to improve what I'm hearing. The idea of putting any sort of drive pedal in front of them just doesn't arise.

Obviously, if we're after some of the fuzzier Hendrix tones or a gorgeous Santana sound or anything in that ballpark then naturally we'll need a pedal for that. I'm nearly wetting my undies with excitement to hear what a Ninja-built fuzz pedal sounds like: it's going to be sex in box if I know anything about you at all! 8)

But for all our '70s type drive sounds I've never found anything I like better than a guitar straight into my TSL. Pure and joyful! [Happy sigh]

Cheers - C

You guys are making me crazy  in a good sense. I am living in a non Marshal amp land. Meaning I find class5 and few others but a choices are limited on a good Marshalls. I love my Fender amps especially my recent DRRI but hopefully in future, I shall have a Marshall. I have a funny story about the Marshall that I will post in another thread not to mess with this one.

Ok onto original post.

My preference is power amp OD and DRRI does a great job but has to be lifted on a stand. I had it on the floor few times and when cranked past 7 it sounded squishy/loose. I use pedals mostly at home for practice to get a crunch and have DRRI volume just below 2. In the smaller club (30-40 seats) I use SCXD cranked but with this one I am not sure if the power amp tubes ever really get cooking due to the DSP. It still gives decent tone and warmth of 6V6. Can't you tell I am a 6V6 fan, kidding. Would love to add a Marshall stack. Everybody needs a Marshall.... okay half stack

Wasn't David Gilmour's approach to run as clean as possible amps, HiWatts, and use pedals for distortion? With fuzz, distortion and boost coming from three different pedals.

Btw, I'm running a BD-2 into a VHT special 6, home use only. The blackstars did catch my eye so thanks for the input Ceri.

I'm playing through a Fender Twin Reverb mostly and use two pedals for overdrive which work pretty well at satisfying my OD needs.

My three choice tones are -

1. Twin Clean
2. w/Bad Monkey = overdriven AC30 approximation.
3. w/ZVEX BoxOfRock = cranked Marshall approximation.

I pretty much keep this Bassman clean and use an OCD for the dirt. If it's a bigger venue, you can crank this into saturation heaven and roll back the guitar's volume knob for the clean stuff ................ Mike Image

I've heard that somewhere before. Gilmour's tone is really good too.

59 Bassman RI (1990) with a old TS808 with the drive way down sounds great.

Twin Reverbs are sweet amps! I almost bought one myself, but I'm going to go with the Deluxe Reverb since I'm my own "roadie" & it's so much lighter.

Hi Cherokee,What model is that head? Most Marshalls I'm familiar with have 6,8 or more control pots but yours has 7 so it has me really confused-please let me know I'm really puzzled over this one.

You completely stole what I was about to say exactly!

As long as the Bassman volume is above 8 for me, I love the cleanish breakup you get just by backing off the guitar volume. Who needs a pristine clean anyway?

It's a hand built 69 Plexi clone. The extra knob is a PPIV master volume. All Mercury iron inside. Tone monster. It was built for me about two years ago by a local Amp Guru that has since passed on. Good catch Guitslinger....... Mike

i am very selective on my amplifier
