I also want to make mention of another one of my favorites Blackfoot, Who I did get to see live back in about 1984. ( they were GREAT live) and Singer Ricky Medlocke went on to continue Skynyrd for the future generations. . 8) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MYM9OU6cuE

Thanks for posting Marvin! I remember that band and a treat to see them again. Ricky singing for Lynyrd Skynyrd seems natural, the band must have been glad to have him, his vocals are a good fit for them.

Keep those videos coming please, here is a "Free Bird" from "The Old Grey Whistle Test" on the BBC from 75, only two guitar players in this video, who is missing and why?

Steve Gaines is definitely AWOL.

Perhaps his passport or visa weren't in order before the tour commenced......?

Gaines wasn't in the band. Wikipedia explains.
In December 1975, Gaines' older sister, Cassie, became a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd's female backup singers, The Honkettes. During this time, the band was in the midst of searching for a guitarist to replace Ed King, who'd left the band in mid-1975. Cassie recommended her brother, and after initial reluctance, the band allowed Gaines to join them onstage for a show in Kansas City on May 11, 1976

Yep that's true about Ricky, there's an Skynyrd album called "First and Last",and Ricky is in a picture of the "first" band.

Medlocke is also credited playing drums on the back of the "Street Survivors' album.

In the early 1990's Blackfoot and another fantastic band called Cry Of Love used to play at the same venues quite frequently. Robert Kearns played bass guitar in Cry Of Love then,he plays bass guitar in Lynyrd Skynyrd now.

Peace Pipe. ------- Best listened to at fat volume. :D

I only got to see Lynyrd Skynyrd one time at a Day On The Green at the Oakland Coliseum, July 1977. This video of Free Bird was taken at that show. If you look real hard between 00:26 and 00:35, I am somewhere out there in that sea of faces :)

I first came across this video about a year ago, what a gas, like stepping into the Wayback Machine. I gathered my wife and kids around the computer to share a little slice of how Dad used to spend his summers 8)

Strato you had big fun that day, good for you Bro, that video has so many cool mentions, Artimus rack toms must be 14s or 15s Dave Grohl uses massive toms like that, Leon played that bass with a pick, he was such a great bass guitar player. Thanks for posting that one Strato!

Wiki
In 1970, Van Zant sought a new name. "One Percent" and "The Noble Five" were each considered before the group settled on "Leonard Skinnerd", a mocking tribute to a physical-education teacher at Robert E. Lee High School, Leonard Skinner,[4] who was notorious for strictly enforcing the school's policy against boys' having long hair.[5][6] The more distinctive spelling was adopted before they released their first album. Note that almost no Southern accent distinguishes between /ɛ/ and /ɪ/ before nasals, so the pronunciation of Leonard Skinner's name would have been /ˌlɪnərd ˈskɪnər/, which is why the 'distinctive' spelling of the name would have made sense to the band members. Despite their high school acrimony, the band developed a friendlier relationship with Skinner in later years, and invited him to introduce them at a concert in the Jacksonville Memorial Coliseum.[7]

RIP Leonard Skinner
