1973 Sunburst Strat with rosewood neck- the "Sweet Home Alabama" guitar. Ed King said the guitar had lousy pick ups. Funny how one of the most Iconic riffs in the history of rock music was played with a lousy guitar. Ed was a master, his replacement Steve Gaines, if he had lived would probably be considered one of the greatest guitarist to ever have lived. Maybe the greatest. He was that good.

Yeah if you listen close to "second Helping" you can hear several instances of some very "distinctive" Strat tones. Still didn't stop him from writing-and playing- some killer music with it.

You can definitely pick out who is playing what part, Allen, Gary, and Ed had very distinct tones. I particularly enjoy Ed's slide playing.

I agree that Steve was awesome- it's too bad his tenure with the band was cut so short... Just one album and a couple of unreleased songs. I'd have loved to hear what the next album or two would have sounded like.

I once read an interview with Gary, where he describes Sparky as the best guitar player he's played with. Coming from Gary that says something, considering who all he's played with.

Pyroman, AFAIK Ed only used that '73 on Sweet Home Alabama. He did use 6 other Strats on Second Helping, and he aways used a Gibson SG on Freebird.

Nobody but Skynyrd could make Peavey gear sound so damn good!

Some ass-kickin' tunes for sure.

I'm fortunate because I saw them before the plane crash. Steve and his older sister were there at Long Beach Arena. Pure Prairie League opened up for LS. I believe it was around 1977 or 78. What I remember the most was that when they played the solo on "Working for MCA" it was note per note perfect like on the album. The live record was not like that.

I was just listening to my re-issue copy of Gimme Back my Bullets today. The bonus live version of Cry for the Bad Man, is excellent! LOVE Allen's rhythm tone there- his guitar just roars!

There's a bunch of favorite songs on there: Roll Gypsy Roll; Trust; Cry for the Bad Man; Searchin'.
