I have this footage on dvd. Great stuff! Ed King is my favorite guitar player in LS. He was also with The Strawberry Alarm Clock. Another cool old band from the 60s.

Somebody HAD to start this thread, and someone else had to necro it. lol.

These guys are HUGE favorites of mine, not to mention major influences on my finally deciding to learn to play. Ed King is why I bought a Strat, after all! Allen's rhythm playing is legendary, and he did some killer solos. Leon is one of my all time favorite bass players, and nobody sang harmony with Ronnie like he did! Gary, is, well, Gary, it simply wouldn't sound like Skynyrd without his distinctive style.

I was watching PG's Rig Review, with the ever lovely Rebecca Dirks, when they did Skynyrd. It actually amazed me how LITTLE gear Gary and Rickey use to get their huge and distinctive sound live. Gary: Himself-> '59 Lester -> Peavey Penta on setting 3. He rides his volumes for everything else. ( plus his old red SG with two G strings for Freebird) That's IT! Rickey- one of his guitars ( LP, Explorer, Strat) an always on Chorus- set very subtle- and an amp ( a Wizard). Plus a wah for some solos. Sparky is the only one with a pedal board, and it's mostly reverb, OD's and delays. Then he uses just his Strat, and a couple Fender amps.

And for the RIP, you need to add Hughie Thomasson, and Ean Evans.

Rickey did indeed play drums in Skynyrd, on the Muscle Shoals album. He replaced Bob Burns, who temporarily left the band for a bit. Also sang lead on a couple of acoustic songs.

My #1 album from them will always be Second Helping. I love them all, but this one just speaks to me. " I Need You" is one of my all time favorite songs. Ronnie sums it up perfectly, and the 3 guitars just get me every time.

I was far too young to have seen them in their early incarnations ( I was 6 and a half, when the plane went down), and have yet to see the modern lineup... I think I've seen every live video, interview, and history on youtube, however!

I'm a Southern rock fanatic, and I've actually seen the Allmann's ( greatest concert EVER), Molly Hatchett ( LOUDEST concert ever...), and Charlie Daniels. ( he was fantastic!)

I WISH I could have seen Skynyrd, Outlaws, Marshall Tucker, and Blackfoot. I do have live CD's from them all, though. Blackfoot sounded like they melted some serious faces in their day!! Rickey loves his guitar loud and searing hot.

Anybody else wish we could have heard Ronnie and Gregg Allmann do a duet?

pyroman, +1 for LS as a somebody someone kinda thing. I'll add some people like blue-eyed soul more than others. Having seen Gregg with the Allmans at Kebworth '74 and Ronnie with LS in Cicero '76 they couldn't duet, two distinctive tenor styles. In they're time they were electrifying stage performers:

Lynrd Skynrd..3 guitars, great songs that are repeatedly played on the radio each and every day.

One problem...do a remix of your best song(IMO) "Simple Man"...and turn down the bass just a hair. People who have ever been recorded by a Skynard fan as an engineer will get the joke...

Incense & Peppermints Baby !!

Saw the Strawberry Alarm Clock on a sunny summer day in 1966 at the old Metropolitan Stadium in Minneapolis - site of the '65 World Series (Twins/Dodgers) and home to the Purple People Eaters Minnesota Vikings (demolished in '85 - now site of the Mall of America).

The Strawberry Alarm Clock were the warm-up act for the Jefferson Airplane... Incense & Peppermints and White Rabbit on the same afternoon !!!

It was enlightening to say the least...

cheers!

Thanks for posting that, Solid Body! I hadn't seen that one before.

I think that's the most I've ever heard from Ed.
