Does anyone have any experience with Rio Grande pickups? A teacher at the store recommended them to me but I have yet to play a guitar with them installed. I was actually thinking more of my Les Paul than my Strats. I'm really happy with my Texas Specials and I'm getting lipsticks for my other Strat. But I don't really like the Burstbucker III on my LP and I think I could probably find a better P-90 for it too. I want something more low output and vintage sounding.

Don't know much about these pickups Texas, when Nicki and the rest of the Bros see this thread they will have the best information for you. Here is the Rio Grande website:

I've heard very good things about the Rio Grandes so far as their strat and tele pups go but not too much about their P90's.

Let me suggest these if you are looking for P90's. I just got a set to replace the Duncans in my Guild Bluesbird and they sound phenomenal. Great vintage sound, lower output but can all give a nice grit when attacked. MojoTone has a great reputation in the industry for their amp cabinets and parts and now their pups are getting notoriety as well. Either the classic or clone series sounds perfect for you since you want something low output.

Classic wound set: Classic P-90s are extremely well balanced with a tight, fat, and round attack. These are stock with Alnico 5 magnets, formvar wire, and nickel silver baseplates. For a super versitile P-90 that cleans up nicely and overdrives smoothly, the Classic P-90's are the right choice. They still have that low output vintage vibe and feel, without being overly bright or thin sounding especially when using gain. The neck pickup is RWRP to allow for hum-canceling between the two. Neck - 7.5k Bridge - 8.5k

Clone Series set: Faithful to the original P-90 using a special blend of Alnico magnets and vintage spec, plain enamel wire. Custom Wound designed the "Clone Series" to sound like the best of the original vintage pickups from the 50's and 60's. Sweet tone and clear sounding with a classic grind, these pickups are dead on! If you have ever heard a really good vintage P-90 from the 50's and 60's, then the Custom Wound Clone P-90's will speak for themselves. Neck - 7.4k Bridge - 8.2k

Clone Series is exactly that...custom clones of specific original pickups from the 50's and 60's. They drip with vintage tone. If you have ever heard a really good sounding pickup from the 50's and 60's then the Clone series speak for themselves. These are the lowest output series which makes them by far the brightest and clearest of the Custom Wound pickup line. Custom options are limited to the vintage design and parts that are used

I had a Robin Medley Custom with Vintage Tallboys & a Tallboy 'bucker that sounded good, but I never bonded with the Floyd Rose so it didn't stay around too long.

Here are some soundclips :
