Hi WCJ: here's several -

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Books,_plan ... onics.html

I've got Guitar Electronics for Musicians. No color diagrams though, and there's plenty of other stuff you won't find in that or any other book I know of. S1 switches, just for example.

The Lace website is good for color diagrams:

http://www.lacemusic.com/wiring/wiring.php

As is Seymour Duncan's site:

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/

But frankly the most use of all are the wiring gurus on this very Forum. Don't want to exclude some by naming others - but ask and I suspect ye shall receive...

Cheers - C

No need to buy a book. Google is your friend! And as Ceri rightly said, there is a wealth of talent here on the forum.

I've used all the links posted above and to add those, this one is good for the basics right up to proper bonkers wiring mods.

Its also worth e-mailing the manufacturers of the pickups your going to use with any wiring queries. I found Glen at Lace very helpful and quick to reply too.

Andy

its not really the wiring dia that im after. im after learning what each piece does to the fullest. pan pot: which ones are used and why?
how to hook up a multimeter and know if its a good control or not.
resistors: when and where to use them? which ones do you use?
how to test them.
pickups: when buying them individually, who do you know which ones will work together? whats running them in series mean? whats parallel?
what would i need either of these for?
how to i split a single coil sized humbucker?
these are a few of the way to many to list questions that i have.

the list goes on and on. i like to read and would much rather buy books for the work bench than a laptop. besides having a refrence manual by you side is way easier than a laptop in most situations.
gad to see you guys rush to my aid on this.
now you see why i want a book. sure i can ask questions here
but its more practical for me to have a book for now. im very sure once i have a book more questions will come and i'll know how to ask them better if that sounds right lol.

Fair enough. Then buy the ones on that Stew-Mac page I linked to and all of those questions will be answered. I think the one I mentioned, Guitar Electronics for Musicians, deals with most of them, if you want just one book.

i ruined a lot of good equipment too.
just wanting to avoid errors of the past and do things
as close to right as i can from the get go.

Almost sounds like you want a Electronics course if you want to know about the "whys and whens" . An "Analog Electronics" course at that.
Can't really help. All my texts were written when semiconductors where limited to transistors!

Last week I ordered these 2 Dan Erlewine guides from Amazon, maybe that's what you're looking for...

http://www.amazon.com/dp/0879309210/ref=pe_113430_17334050_pd_recs_email_dt_d7

http://www.amazon.com/Electric-Guitar-Great-Softcover-Player/dp/0879306017/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b

There's also this book

http://www.amazon.com/Guitar-Electronics-Understanding-Wiring-Diagrams/dp/0615165419/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_c

I came across this site, found it very helpful with lots of articles and videos, I'm clueless when it comes to electronics!

Well these have all been good suggestions so far. What else is there to add?....hmm...Dave Hunter's Guitar Pickups Handbook will suit you just fine based on what you're looking for.
http://www.amazon.com/Guitar-Pickups-Ha ... 0879309318 This book would be my #1 suggestion. Lots of pics and pickup comparisons and specs. Dave Hunter has a knack for being able to write technical info in a way that even non-techies like me can understand. His Guitar Amp Handbook is awesome also.
