Inmate cost for Maryland in 2009 was 38,654.00 a year. Theres 23 counties with 29 Jails that hold 14,250 inmates and there are 11 State Prison facilities with 22,255 inmates. In 2009 Md. crime rate was %12 higher then national average and incarceration rates for crimes were %12 lower then nation average. Theres no room and cost is %26 above national average. 648 violent crimes per 100,000 and 3,518 property crimes per 100,000
Death penalty cases cost about 1.9 million per conviction. There only 5 people on death row now and the only place that pursues it against criminals is Baltimore County the largest county in the state and 3rd. most populated which also has less the %7 of the murders.

Hi CV: interesting. I can see different and contradictory conclusions to draw from those numbers. Once you've digested them, what view do you take?

I am for the death penalty and feel the appeals process needs shorting to lower the cost and time frame. Incarceration is tough but not as it used to be. Take away the weights, tv's , radio's. Violence in prisons have not decreased with these comforts. I wish I had answers but we as a society do very little for the social economic groups that many of these criminals come from. We have created many programs of failure.

I think his future prospects are worse than death.

The trial was held in my home town, my 85 year old mother lives about 200 meters away from the court house. Never been in that court house myself. I know the judge.

Last Monday I was lining up for my morning coffee, and somebody left their newspaper on a table. And there he was, front page, the entire front page, in colour, in bra and panties, and they didn't match.

The details being made so public has been interesting, very little has been kept from the press.

He'll be drummed out of the military and his medal removed but apparently he will still qualify for a $60k per year pension. It will take a motion from parliament to take his pension away, seems like a no brainer but you never know.

Here's a novel approach:

Superglue the perp to the bottom of a non-stop freight train going from California to Florida. If he survives, give him a return trip...free!

just kidding...

While I don't advocate or oppose the death penalty (too many holes and inequities in the system to be sure), I find it perverted and disgusting that criminals are given greater privileges than their victims, and how many cry about the "horrors" suffered by those "poor people" in prison.

If prisons were a lot less inviting without the weightrooms, gyms,TVs and God knows what other privileges there would be fewer repeat offenders. If criminals were obtuse enough to reoffend and with each successive period of incarceration they were given less pleasing accomodations -that may cause a drop in recidivism.
