TC, it has been awhile, when you let us know that your oldest daughter was taken from you by the drunk driver I felt sadness in my heart for you, my thoughts and prayers went out to you and your family then and have been going your way and still are now my friend. Please know this, we love you, we are with you and as long as it takes for you to find peace from your loss we will wait with you, you are not alone Bro.

Well, the trial of the drunk driver that killed my oldest daughter last year ended yesterday. They convicted him of vehicular manslaughter (don't know why the jury would not go for homicide, dammit) and sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
Which means he will be out in about 7. But that is about what I expected.

I just wonder when that "feeling of closure" that people are supposed to feel is going to start kicking in.....not yet.

Trouble,
I am sorry to hear about the death of your eldest child.
As long as there is alcohol, there will be alcohol related fatalities.

As for the feeling of closure, justice doesn't offer closure. Putting a drunk driver away for 99 years will not bring closure nor would running over him with a Mack truck bring closure. Cutting his head clean off will not do it either. you go on down the list of retribution methods but none of them
will truly bring closure. You can daydream about what you might do but that won't do it either.
Every time you hear about another alcohol or drug related death you will be reminded of your daughter. Perhaps, her death could be turned into something positive like joining a cause to ban alcohol in any public place such as bars, clubs, parks, beaches, campsites, work, office etc. allowing only at home drinking with absolute life in prison sentence or death sentence as the penalty for killing someone while under the influence.
Like cigarettes, far more aggressive countermeasures should be in place.
Alcohol not only kills people due to motor vehicle accidents but also under many other circumstances as well.

Texting and cell phone use while driving should be treated like alcohol as well.

God bless all of your for you love and words of compassion.

I did not mean to whine or burden you with this. It was just that having to relive it for the trial - well, let's just say that it rather pulled some of the scabs off.

But I very much appreciate all of my friends here!

TC not a burden at all.

having also lost loved ones to drunk driving, I will tell you that 'closure' is just some made up term that therapists and psychiatrists throw around.

You never get completely over the loss of a loved one. What the imprisonment of the individual responsible does is gives you a measure of peace of mind, both that he is punished and that he is not free to reoffend.

I remember clearly when you posted about this tragic event. Now as then you have my sincerest condolences.
