Well, the trial of the drunk driver that killed my oldest daughter last year ended yesterday. They convicted him of vehicular manslaughter (don't know why the jury would not go for homicide, dammit) and sentenced him to 15 years in prison.
Which means he will be out in about 7. But that is about what I expected.

I just wonder when that "feeling of closure" that people are supposed to feel is going to start kicking in.....not yet.

I know that people say they know how you feel TC. I don't have any idea how I would be able to handle something that horrible happening to one of my children. You have all of my respect and condolences my friend. If there was anything I could do or say to help ease your loss I'd do it in a heartbeat. Much love from the Hopkins family sir!!

Wish I could offer words of solace, but I really could not imagine what you've gone through and what you continue to face. Hope you can find whatever peace you can...

Mate I honestly don't think theres any justice/vengance/recompense that could in any way lead you to think, 'well thats it, payback'. What could possibly be a fair price to pay for what you've lost.

Such a senseless act and terrible consequence of that act.

Glad he got a decent amount of time, I hope it's hard as hell on him. That he doesn't get chance for early release through good behaviour.

I'm constantly amazed how lenient our courts are to DD's.

I'm truly sorry about your daughter.
A girl who was a friend of my son was killed by a drunk on I-40 last year at the McCory Ln exit here in Mid. TN....the drunk got onto the interstate on the wrong lane and hit her head on....she was driving home after work.
So wrong,in so many ways.

Troublecall, Sorry about your daughter. There is nothing worse than the loss of a child no matter what the cause, but for something as senseless as drunk driving it's got to be really rough. My prayers go out to you and the rest of your family.

I remember reading that and I'm real sorry. It seems that criminals don't get what they deserve. It makes me question the system. I would probably go to jail and get life for retaliation. Don't take matters into your own hands..... it ain't worth it. Sorry again.

Hi TC: some of us remember when this first happened and have had you in our hearts ever since.

I don't think there is such a thing as closure in a case like this. My brother died in much simpler circumstances (natural causes) and it took my mother four years to even begin to turn a corner over it. Terrible for a brother: surely even worse for a parent.

How can there be closure over someone you will miss every moment for the rest of your life?

The only thing I know, from experience, is that when eventually we begin to give up some of the pain we don't in the slightest begin to give up the person. In fact, we can then be closer to them in our thoughts and our hearts because at last as the hurt lessens we find ourselves recalling new things about them that we thought we'd forgotten, we can hear their voice and see their face more clearly in our minds, and in that way we draw nearer to them.

If or when you can, put the killer aside. Nothing to be gained there. Your daughter, Errin, will be with you forever. Concentrate on her and on the family you still have with you. All of you are the ones that matter.

Too many words, I know. Just be aware that people far away are with you in spirit.

Best wishes - C

T.C. I remember the terrible day that your daughter was slaughtered by that dangerous criminal. The time is long, long overdue to start putting away these murderers for life for that is what they are murderers. To show such a wanton disregard for human life is vicious and callous.Too many of these fools get second, third and even more chances, there should be zero tolerance period. You may remember me saying that I had a beloved cousin and a dearly loved coworker both killed by 3 time offenders and both got off with minimal sentences.I'm an avid supporter of MADD (Mothers against drunk driving)and I urge others to get involved either with MADD or write or email your elected representatives to push them to get any deaths caused by drunk driving to be treated and prosecuted as homocide enough is enough.I hope that over time the wounds in your heart heal and are replaced with happy memories of your precious daughter we all feel for you and will always be there for you-God Bless.
