i play my sg400 a lot :D it's now running with gibson pups and pots , 496r and 500t , what a bloody sound  as for the pup covers , they are wax potted and a pita do remove , if i was you do like i did and check the bay for a set of gibby pups and change out the pots and wiring , it's not too hard to do and it'll give you a bit of insight into the workings of a guitar , also you'll be able to do your own repairs , hth riley , cheers
Alan

I put those pickups in my 79 SG Std about 15 years ago. Fabulous pups.

I'm actually going to be purchasing an Epi SG this weekend so I'm glad to see that the reviews are good.

Ha, 1 day old and I had my first issue with the new SG G-400 :)

The input jack fell into the guitar, I took it back to shop and had them fix it,
Easy fix, but figured why should I do it on a 1 day old axe.

Store says this is the most common issue they see on the epiphones and it will probably happen again as it lossens up with use.

While they had it open I noted the actual jack looks real cheap has almost no threads on it.
So that will nead to be changed at some point to a real swichcraft jack.

Other components looked OK, pots say Alpha a500k Ω (Tone) and b500k Ω (Volume).
Caps were brown and could see no name or value on them.
Wiring looked OK, though not as neat as in a real Gigson SG, cavity was shielded on the back cover side only.

The pups do sound nice, though not as hot&heavy as the 498T & 490R pups in a Gibson SG standard.
But for 1/4 the price it is a good and servicable guitar!

for the money the sg400 is a good guitar , but with a little work and a wee bit of money they can be made into a killer axe , my one will stand it's ground against a gibby sg anyday , my sg sits in the living room with my strat next to the jcm800 , i have a few other guitars but the sg is the most comfy beast i own , the strat is very close :D but when my back is giving me trouble the sg is the lightest as well . to anyone thinking of getting one , just do it , you will not be disapointed at all 8)

My buddy dropped by the other night with his newly acquired Orville by Gibson Les Paul to try it out on my JCM 800-Les Paul+JCM 800= tonal bliss. Anyway I plugged my Epi G-400 Custom into the JCM 800 and his jaw dropped-it just floored him-and that's with the standard Epi Alnico pups.
