so it would seem that my SG is getting played more than my squier strat...alot more. I haven't picked up my strat for like 2 weeks! Dont really like the looks of the SG, but its tone.....i was amazed when i started playing some of my songs on it, they sounded so "right" on that guitar. an i've had it for like almost a year, barely played it til now.

anyone else got a epiphone SG? i know a few people do.

I had one, one of thee cheaper models with the bolt-on neck (G-310) and I liked it fine. I was more immpressed with the nice low action than I was with the tone, but that may have been the cheap Marshall SS 15 watter I was playing it through.

I've been thinking a lot on picking up an epi sg just to have the sound of those humbucker pickups.

Seems to be a lot of differenet epi SG models , not sure which of them might be a better choice. :?

Though for my normal music style it is the strat all the way. Usually blues, lately on a Gilmour kick :)

Actually I have been toying with the idea of an Epi SG for some time now. Naturally I would have to gut out the el-crappo pups and pots and replace with quality stuff. It all started when I compared a Gibson SG to an Epi SG in the store about a year ago and noticed the Epi had a much smoother (more comfortable) transition from neck to body when playing the extreme upper registers. Can't be spending money on a guitar right now though as I'm saving and attempting to justify an expensive amp deal.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

My first electric, a 310 in flat black, (same finish as the goth).

Picked up my first tube amp last night, VHT 6 and a boss blues driver.

Plugged my squier in, turned up the gain on the pedal.......real nice.

Plugged in the SG.........really, really nice.

Humbuckers vs single coils, I like em both.

telling you man, a vintage Guild S-100 with the HB1 pickups in it will give you the tone you are looking for especially for the style of music you like to play. Save up now and get one, you wont be disappointed, it is just what you need.

'Bought a Gibson SG Faded Brown 2 1/2 years ago on sale. Added pup covers and good knobs and truss rod cover and got a hot setup.

It's been a favourite ever since. In this opinion, kind of like "Gibson's Telecaster."

Good to hear you are getting a lot of enjoyment from your SG!

Hi Riley,I have the Epi G-400 Custom(3 pup SG bodied Les Paul i/c gold hardware)and it's a fabulous guitar with all 3 pups engaged it almost sounds Strat like and there 7 different pickup combinations so the tonal possibilities are practically endless. She has the Alnico III pups and the neck although a bit wider than a Strat is very comfortable. My daughter's boyfriend played it and liked it more than his Gibson SG for sound and playability. They are quite addictive. I believe that Alanssaab has one too that he loves.I also have the Guild S-100 like Blackcatbone has and that's quite a guitar also but the 400 Custom is more versatile when it comes to tonal variation.

I bought my son an EPI SG custom Prophecy with the "sticky finger" pickups. It's a beautiful guitar to look at, and it sounds good, but after playing my Strat, I find it, I dunno, kind of "clunky".

Different strokes.

hmm, so it would seem that some of you are saying its better than the gibson SG? I guess the quality f todays gibson SG's are alot crummier than the early ones.

question; can i take the pickup covers off? will it effect the sound in a good way?

I'm not sure if you can remove the covers but I wouldn't attempt it just in case the pups were potted (coated in wax to reduce hum and feedback) after the covers were put on as doing so could cause the windings on the coils to break. The difference removing the covers would make would be negligible antway.

I can testify that I'd take my '79 SG Std over a modern one by a longshot. Just my experience ...
