2 things:

1- i would play only if paid. these people have so doggone much money. don't let them stick it to you.

2- i would refuse to say anything political on stage or off during the event. it doesn't matter how you feel about the candidate. anything said politically will surely alienate some people. ask the dixie chicks or linda rondstadt.

I'm sure that this is a top "money gig" and if so, I would gladly do the gig, but on breaks I would leave the venue and not partake in the political aspect of it.

This is a non-paying gig Mike.

We actually have 2 to play today. This one, then the Mirage tonight. Now THAT one pays good.

I'll let you guys know how it turns out later. This show is at noon.

I try to stay away from political crap...in my head I can still see Tipper Gore standing next to my Marshall amp,and the drummer telling two guys in suits to tell her to wait her turn to spout her B/S into the mic.
Little did they know who we were and how little we cared...she came up to me and told me who she was and how good we sounded...yeah right.

Personally I would not play for any particular party. I would not want to be associated with any party.

Some people just do not care for certain parties and I would not want to make any fans mad.

If you do not care about that or are a firm supporter for a particular party, I say go for it.

Is this a joke or something? It sounds like a great opportunity to get some exposure regardless of the event or paycheck. Who knows who might be in the crowd and hear your band. If someone told you there's a 1% chance it might get you a record deal would you pass? You have to look at every gig like that. The bands that a make it big are the ones willing to work at it and risk everything.

Here's my take as a small business owner. Freebies, unless it's a charity event will only get you more freebie gigs. There is more than likely a 0% chance of getting a paying gig let alone a recording deal from a political event. At most political events, unless you're a recording artist, no one but the kids will pay any attention to what you're doing anyway. This comes from 25+ years of playing paying gigs. If you want to do a freebie and get exposure, volunteer as an opening act at a festival.

If you do it. Do it for fun and nothing more.

Well, it was interesting. Not much to it really. We showed up, waited for a band to finish. They had it set up in more of a grassy quad area. Just a bunch of students walking around.

Set up our gear. there was no power up there for a while. Our set was cut to 25-minutes. The Senator Harry Reid had indeed arrived. No biggie. Banged out about 6-songs. Sold a few CDs, talked to some future fans, and booked it on out of there. We had good responses to our music. It was all UNLV students, and everyone thought we were cool, they liked the music.

All in all.. Yea, it was a fun little afternoon. Now, I'm gonna take a nap and get ready for the Mirage tonight. That gig pays very good.

It really was no big deal at all. Nice sunny afternoon.

Unless you stand behind the agenda and beliefs of Senator Reid, Stretch Pelosi or Obama then I would say pass. If you believe in their agenda then play. That is what I would use to make my decision.

Any musician or band who plays a full gig ( 3-4 hours) for free is crazy. They hurt themselves and every other musician.

Bars and restaurants sell their drinks and food, they don't give it away. "Events" have budgets for the venue, food, sound man, advertising and/or other expenses, so why not the music?

Unless it is a really big publicity benefit to you, or a short and easy performance that you chalk up to good will or exposure, then I say forget it.

Personally I will not spend 2+ hours setting up and tearing down my equipment (PA System, amps, guitars), plus perform for 3 or 4 hours for free for anyone. (Old saying : why buy a cow when you can get milk for free?) It would only hurt me when I try to get paying gigs.

Just this week the local TEA PARTY asked me to do 2 songs to close out their "get out the vote" rally. I was paid $100 and did 3 songs for them: "Evil Ways", "Satisfaction" and "Times they are a changin'", all obviously anti incumbent themes.

Have fun when you play, BUT GET PAID. You provide a valuable service, whoever your audience is.

Would you play at a Nazi rally. As much as you may not think it if you play at it you support it.

Bah.. C'mon. Not that big a deal.

UNLV campus. It was fun. The people there enjoyed us. Even gave us some free pizza.

I think there are people on here over-thinking this.
