On Woodsongs the other night, they had Steve Wariner as a guest for the entire show. Played a big fat 1958 Gretch 6120. What a master on the guitar, and an awesome vocalist. Then I started thinking about all the great classic country guitarists, not the shred country playing you hear nowdays. Mostly Tele players, too. Roy Nichols with Merle Haggard, Don Rich with Buck Owens, Luther Perkins with Johnny Cash, Eldon Shamblin with Bob Wills, Billy Byrd with Ernest Tubb, Hank Garland, Phil Baugh, Chet Atkins, Mostly players from the 50's and 60's. I've got a friend who's son is playing lead guitar for Jason Aldean. He's a player for sure, but he sounds like the rest of them on the radio today. There's no individuality anymore. You could hear any of the guitarists I've mentioned, even before the singer would start, and you knew who was gonna start singing. Pete Anderson with Dwight Yokum was about the last of the stylists out there. Of course there's Brad Paisley with his 90 notes a second playing, Keith Urban who in fact, is great, Brent Mason and Vince Gill, Marty Stuart and his band, but really, the list of currant country guitar players is pretty interchangable.

You mentioned Luther Perkins,he was a great one....my BIL played with Tom T. Hall and Tom gave him one of Luther's guitars,he was one of my BIL's main influences.
I always liked to hear Don Rich, man what a tasty player.

Much love for the Auld Gang, right now singing the praise of Thomas (Grady) Martin, who played with Marty Robbins.

What a master.

Roy Clark is amazing!

There's also Merle Travis, Albert Lee...

Everybody overlooks Willie Nelson...that man can play guitar!

He approaches the instrument more like a jazz player than a country guy. I would love to hear him playing a big jazz box through a warm, round-sounding tube amp.

The great country pickers are just something else, guys like Danny Gatton, Marty Stuart,Kenny Vaughn and of course my friend Scotty Moore etc. can outplay just about any of the rock shredders out there today as they put something in their music that doesn't exist in shred and that's heart.

I have to admit until about 2 months ago I hated most country music save for a few old school artists and thanks to Brad Paisley I have really started looking more into country music.
